Subject: COP26 Observer Status
Dear Colleagues,
We have now received a response from the UNFCCC Secretariat in relation to our Observer Status, to confirm that we have been provisionally admitted to COP26, which is great news! It is important to note, we technically are not an admitted organisation until the COP formally admits us at its 26th session (COP 26), but our Observer Status is confirmed.
The role of 'observers'
Official observer organisations play an important role in the UNFCCC process by sending delegates to observe the formal proceedings. Observers often:
• help to interpret what is happening at the COP and explain this to wider stakeholder networks
• highlight when ambitious actions and statements are made to encourage similar actions among other parties
• act as a watchdog to flag when parties (in their view) are not being ambitious enough, or are backsliding on commitments
• amplify the voices of parties and stakeholders that aren't being heard
• bring a diversity of views and expertise to the negotiations
Representatives of observer organisations are sometimes invited to participate in mandated events such as in-session workshops as panellists or to facilitate discussions.
We now have access to the UNFCCC Online Registration portal, which allows us to nominate representatives to join our proposed delegation for COP26. It is important to note:
1. We need to nominate all our proposed representatives by 23:59 CEST on 31st August.
2. We then need to wait to be given a quota (i.e. maximum number of representatives), which will be confirmed around 6th September.
3. The portal will reopen for confirmation of representatives on 6th September, and close at 23:59 CEST on 22nd October.
4. If our stipulated quota is lower than the number of representatives we nominate, we will need to reduce our number of representatives, and confirm the Strathclyde delegation by 22nd October. Please therefore note, not all nominations are guaranteed a place as a Strathclyde representative at COP26.
5. If we do need to reduce the number of Strathclyde representatives, we will need to base decisions as to who should attend, on alignment to the topics and themes under discussion, and consider where we can have the biggest impact.
6. If you or a colleague would like to be nominated as a Strathclyde representative, the following information is required for registrations, which should be sent back to tanya.kay at strath.ac.uk<mailto:tanya.kay at strath.ac.uk>.
* Complete name (as it appears on photographic identification)
* Date of birth
* Nationality
* Passport or other photo identification number (driver’s license, etc.)
* Email address
* Short summary outlining why you should attend COP26 as a Strathclyde representative
If there are Strathclyde colleagues out with the COP26 Advisory Group that should be nominated, please forward this email on to them.
