Subject: UKRI stipend uplift 2022/23
Importance: High
Dear Heads of Departments
Can you please circulate the email below to academic colleagues in your Department/School?
As you may know the UKRI have increased the minimum stipend for 2022/23 to £17,668 full time equivalent. This is an increase of 10% on the previously announced £16,062 and an increase of £1,606 for all UKRI funded students. Please see the UKRI website<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ukri.org%2Fnews%2Fukri-increasing-the-minimum-stipend-from-1-october-2022%2F%23%3A~%3Atext%3DUK%2520Research%2520and%2520Innovation%2520(UKRI%2Cstudies%2520from%25201%2520October%25202022.&data=05%7C01%7Cstefan.kuhr%40strath.ac.uk%7C71df3f7b729c493985e508daa08bef91%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637998820118867148%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=BtWtf%2BDacafgvDK5I3lXLTos9O4%2BnHbh0hdhCamcuwo%3D&reserved=0> for further details.
The PGR Funding Team have updated the PGR System records for UKRI funded students managed by the PGR Funding Team (EPSRC DTP, EPSRC ICASE, EPSRC NPIF, EPSRC Maths Sci, AHRC, ESRC and those EPSRC CDT students who receive central University CDT funding contributions). We do not manage the other research council studentship schemes (BBSRC, NERC, STFC) or those studentships funded by UKRI grants held at other Universities, but we have updated the PGR System for all that we have a record of. The EPSRC CDT administrators will update the EPSRC CDT student records that do not have central university CDT funding. The UKRI are fully covering the uplift from 1st October 2022 - 31st March 2023. From 1st April 2023- 30th September 2023 the UKRI are only covering the uplift at the percentage of the original studentship package. The remaining costs are being covered by additional central university funds (the original co-funders will not be expected to contribute to the uplift for 2022/23). We will be back in touch regarding future years for these studentships.
As the non UKRI studentships created/managed by the PGR Funding Team (University SRSS, SCDT (with Central University funding), ISP, NPL, Arnold Clark, GSK and IGSQT) align to the UKRI minimum stipend levels the PGR Funding Team have also updated the PGR System for these students. The uplift to stipend is being fully covered by additional central university funding for 2022/23 (the original co-funders will not be expected to contribute to the uplift for 2022/23). We will be back in touch regarding future years for these studentships.
We have informed all PGR Administrators of the students this uplift applies to and highlighted the records which have not yet been updated as they have not been pulled through from Pegasus/do not have the original data entered. The Departments will be updating these records asap and the PGR Funding Team will then add the uplift per record.
For all the other non UKRI schemes not managed by the PGR Funding Team (funded by the faculty , department, industry, charities, sponsored etc) there is currently no central funding for a stipend uplift. For these awards, the individual funder can make the decision regarding an uplift.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best wishes
