Dear Colleagues,

Many thanks to those of you who have already responded to last week's request to contribute to our outreach and recruitment events.

However the overall response rate was rather underwhelming so far. Could I kindly ask you again to consider to which kind of activity you would like to contribute (other suggestions are also welcome) and let Claire know, ideally by the end of this week? These activities are really important for our Department. Thank you very much again!

Best wishes,

Stefan

Subject: Outreach and recruitment events - help needed!
Importance: High

Dear Colleagues,

The Department has resumed and started campaigns to reach out to prospective students via a number of channels, such as the University Open Days, the Open Evenings, outreach events and exhibitions, or visits to secondary schools. Let me thank again those colleagues who have already been contributing to running recent events, such as the Open Days.

Our campaign is in light of a very low number of undergraduate students starting this Academic Year, and raising this number to a sustainable level is essential for our future as a Physics Department. This can best be done as a joint effort with contributions from every academic, researcher and student, and I would encourage each of you to participate in at least one outreach event per academic year.

Possible opportunities for engagement are:

  * Presenting your research at the Physics Undergraduate Open Evening to prospective students and their parents, especially by hosting lab tours, Thursday 10th November, 6.30pm - 8.30pm
  * Representing the Department at STEMfest, 10th - 12th November at Glasgow Science Centre
  * Representing the Department at the Institute of Physics annual fair, "Big Bounce", 29th - 30th October. We will run workshops and activities in the Barras and the Barrowlands Ballroom.
  * Presenting an exciting bit of modern Physics and information about studying Physics at Strathclyde at secondary schools
  * Hosting school visits at the Department
If you are happy to help, please can you email Claire McNally (claire.mcnally at strath.ac.uk<mailto:claire.mcnally at strath.ac.uk>) indicating what activities you would be willing to support. Also, if you did any school visits in the past, would you be able to let Claire know as well and share with us what material you presented, as this may be very useful for other colleagues.

Many thanks in advance on behalf of the Department for your support!

Very best wishes,

Stefan
