Internal Selection Process - Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Research Fellowships and Engineering for Development Research Fellowships 2023/24

The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Research Fellowships and Engineering for Development Research Fellowships call is now open: https://raeng.org.uk/research-fellowships

The external submission deadline is 19 September 2023.

This is a demand-managed call and each Host Institution can submit up to 4 applications, provided two of the four applications are submitted by candidates belonging to a group that is persistently under-represented within UK engineering (Women; Black people including those with mixed ethnicity with black ethnic background(s); and Disabled people).

These Fellowships are designed to promote research excellence in engineering. They provide support for early career researchers to become future research leaders in engineering. Applications are welcomed from outstanding researchers worldwide who have been awarded their PhD in the last four years. The duration of the Fellowship is five years full-time (pro-rata for part-time awards) and must be the only form of employment. Each application is capped at a maximum contribution from the Academy of £625,000 over the 5-year period, at 80% of full economic cost.

Please note: in previous rounds, candidates must not have held a permanent academic position. This eligibility criterion is no longer applicable. Therefore, lecturers/CFs may now be eligible to apply if they satisfy the other eligibility criteria.

In relation to under-representation, the RAEng is offering optional Access Mentoring Support<https://raeng.org.uk/access-mentoring>. The application process for this is separate to the research fellowships process. The mentoring deadline is 15 August 2023, although earlier submission is encouraged.

Engineering is defined in its broadest sense, encompassing:

  *   Civil, construction and environmental
  *   Materials and mining
  *   Chemical and process
  *   Aerospace
  *   Transport and mechanical
  *   Manufacturing and design
  *   Electrical and electronic
  *   Energy and power
  *   Medical and bioengineering
  *   Computing and communications

As in previous years, an internal selection process will be required to select the most promising applications to go forward from Strathclyde. For internal review and selection, applicants are requested to submit the following application documentation, addressing the call's Assessment Criteria<https://raeng.org.uk/media/w1jiirzr/raeng-applicant-guidance-research-fellowship-2023-2024.pdf>:

  *   CV (max. 3 pages)
  * Completed internal selection pro-forma (see attached)
  * Statement of Support from Head of Department/Director of Research/Senior Academic providing an assessment of (i) the candidate (quality of the applicant's track record; potential of the applicant to become a future leader in their chosen field) (ii) research quality and vision (timeliness, novelty, vision and ambition) and (iii) beneficiaries and impact (potential to translate research outcomes into societal and economic impact) (max. 1 page, written in non-specialist engineering terms)

The timelines are as follows:

21 July 2023 @ noon
