Dear PhD Physics students,

Annual progress assessments for PhD students, which usually take place in September, were suspended this year due to the marking & assessment boycott.

In order that students do not go too long without a substantial review of progress, students are asked to submit their annual review forms via SPIDER a few days before the Xmas break (Monday 18th Dec). This should allow supervisors to complete their section of the review form before Xmas so that we are able to hold most progress vivas for 1st & 2nd year students on return in January. I hope to hold as many progress vivas as possible in the consolidation week (beginning 8th Jan) before teaching starts again. 3rd year students will have a brief progress meeting with an assessor later in January.

If you have other commitments which will make meeting this deadline difficult, please let me know so alternative arrangements can be made.

You can find details of this year's PGR assessment/progression procedure on the PhD Physics student MyPlace page

https://classes.myplace.strath.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=25725

under the "Progression assessment" toggle. There you will find requirements and guidance for years 1, 2 & 3 of PhD study. Please read the one appropriate to you. If you are unsure, please discuss with your supervisor or get in touch with me.

I realise that some supervisors/groups have already held vivas for their students - supervisors have been asked to let me know of cases where this has happened.

If you have already submitted an annual review form but need/want to update it, let me know and I will re-open it on SPIDER.

Regards

Gordon
