Dear all,
Next month, our undergraduate students will be receiving any marks delayed from last year by the impact of the industrial action in the second semester.
Several students have performed poorly in the exams last year, in some cases not achieving what would normally be a pass mark. They are likely to want to discuss their performance with you.
The students were progressed into the following year, so have the credits for all the modules which they attempted in 2022/23. But the actual marks, now that they are available, will be used to calculate their credit weighted average.
Particularly for our current 4th year students, this means that a proportion of their final degree award will come from those assessments (25% from 3rd year, 75% from current year).
In cases where there are strong personal circumstances, it may be possible for the students to re-take the assessment as a first attempt in the Spring exam diet or the Summer resits. However, in most cases, this is unlikely to be in their interests (extra studying required for material from a year ago and further pressure in the main exams which will distract from the more important final exams, or disruption of their Summer). If eligible students do want to consider resitting, please refer them to their current Year Coordinator to discuss their options:

where X is their number of their current year of study.
In other cases, the progression decision is equivalent to the normal situation of students having the marks from their first attempt but obtaining the credits as though through a successful resit last Summer. Please emphasise that this situation is basically the same as if they had passed their failed modules at resit, so they are not being disadvantaged compared to what would normally happen.
There are resources for supporting distressed students at:

which you might find generally useful.
Regards,
Ben
