Hi everyone,

The physics society invites all students and staff to join us for an evening lecture by Dr Alison McLeod of Technology Scotland. Alison's talk is titled "Photonics in Scotland". Alison is the director of Photonics Scotland and has a background in laser physics, having done her PhD at the University of St Andrews. She has built her career around supporting organisations to further their scientific results and make good use of the results.

This talk will be held in TL423 at 5.30pm on Tuesday 15 October. This event will be of particular interest to students and staff working in (or who have colleagues working in) the photonics sector (academic and industrial).

Abstract:

Scotland has a unique history and strength in photonics that goes back over a century, a true pioneer in optical engineering, playing a leading role in the development of modern optics. Today the Scottish photonics sector continues to be at the cutting edge of innovation, with leadership in areas such as lasers, compound semiconductors, Li-Fi and quantum technologies, supporting important sectors including space, life sciences, renewable energy, manufacturing and communications.

Scotland's photonics industry is a major contributor to the UK economy. Renowned as one of the world's leading centres for photonics, the sector accounts for over £1.3 billion in output per annum and employs more than 7,000 people in high value added jobs.

With over 60 companies at its heart, supported by a globally recognised academic base and a powerful network of translational assets and RTOs, Scotland's photonics sector is well-placed to continue address some of the world's grand challenges, making its reach and influence truly global.

Thanks,

Matt
