Dear colleagues,

I am writing to provide some details on our Departmental plans for the annual Research Quality Review process and to highlight actions for all colleagues detailed below.

As part of the University's strategy the institution is undertaking an Annual Research Quality Review (RQR) process to support the development of our shared research culture and the quality of research we deliver. The University's approach to this process and the associated preparations for the next submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF2029) is to:

  * Use REF 2029 as a driver for positive change.
  * Use our Research Quality Review (RQR) framework to support departments and units to enhance their research performance and plan for REF 2029.

  * Put the support, training, policies and tools in place that enhance our performance across all three REF quality sub-profiles
  * Ensure activities are cross-cutting, such that we drive improvement across the University.

An important aspect of this process is to assess the Department's research outputs in line with REF criteria. This process will run annually with the Department reporting in early September. The timeline for the departmental RQR is as follows:

  * Open call for colleagues to propose outputs to the Output Review Tool (details provided below)
  * A panel of reviewers have been nominated from across research Divisions and will review outputs following REF criteria guidelines between April and August
  * The Dept. will collate the results and return these in the RQR report to the University in September.

Actions
I would therefore ask colleagues to propose eligible outputs in the Output Review Tool as soon as they are available on the system to give reviewers ample time to review them. Colleagues are asked only to propose up to a maximum of 3 outputs at this stage. Outputs proposed should be self-assessed as a minimum of a 3* rating following the definitions from REF2021:
4*: Quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
3*: Quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour but which falls short of the highest standards of excellence.
2*: Quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

The process for proposing an output is:

  1. Logon to the Output Review Tool using your DS credentials (https://spider.science.strath.ac.uk/ref/login.php)
  2. Under the 'Propose' heading, select 'Physics' and you should be directed to the list of eligible outputs that can be proposed
  3. Select an output to propose by clicking on the 'Propose' button on the right hand side of the screen in-line with the relevant output
  4. Add a short description in the 'Reason for Proposing' that may reference relevant details of the output's originality and significance

Thank you all for your support with the RQR process.

Best regards,
Michael
