Dear colleagues,
The West of Scotland KTP Centre is working with the University of Strathclyde to launch a new initiative to empower more women to engage in Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP).
The Women in KTP (WiKTP) project is a part of the ‘Collaborative Cultures’ programme, a University-wide Wellcome Trust funded project on Research Culture. The funding aims to develop new inclusive leadership opportunities, supporting under-representation in collaborative Research and Innovation Cultures.
The WiKTP project will be built around a community of academics focused on engaging in Knowledge Exchange with external organisations. The project will be delivered through a series of four workshops designed to achieve key objectives: building a supportive network and community of likeminded academics, enhancing self-promotion skills, and creating a comprehensive toolkit to facilitate engagement with external organisations. The project will be supported via a marketing and business development resource that will aim to identify organisations that are suitable for engagement, enabling academics to approach these organisations directly using the skills they have developed.
The University views KTPs as a highly effective way to engage with external organisations/industry in impactful collaborations. KTP’s are strategically important and meet the Strathclyde 2030 pillars of:
1. Outstanding Education & Student Experience; by using ‘real-world’ examples of academic innovation to tackle challenges.
2. World-Leading Research; by delivering high-quality research with impact which is often cited in REF impact case studies.
3. Transformative Innovation & Impact; by actively engaging in, and resolving, strategic level challenges within external organisations/industry.
Prof. Jillian MacBryde, Associate Principal, said “I believe that we need to support, encourage, and celebrate diversity in academia, as well as wider industry. I have been involved in multiple KTP’s, and they have provided a fantastic opportunity to apply my own academic research in an industrial setting. This has helped me to build my industry network, whilst at the same time helping companies make a real difference to their own products, services and working environments. The Women in KTP project will help more women engage in knowledge exchange, reaffirming the University’s commitment as a socially progressive institution”.
Elaine Wallace, Director of the West of Scotland KTP Centre, said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to involve more women in KTP—a funding mechanism that delivers a wide range of benefits for both academics and partner organisations. KTPs are a brilliant way to build strong industry relationships, secure funding, and identify future research priorities. They enhance teaching, provide valuable student placements, and turn research into real-world impact, contributing to REF. On top of that, they support patents, intellectual property, and exciting cross-faculty collaborations that showcase the university’s strengths.”
