Hi Everyone,
Join us for the second guest talk of the semester: "Application of Intense Laser Light" by Dr Mark Wiggins. This talk will be held in TL423 (Teaching and Learning Building) at 5pm on Tuesday 4th February. Please see the link below to book your free ticket. As always, all students and staff are welcome to attend. I hope to see you all there!

Abstract:
Lasers are, of course, vitally important now to our everyday lives thanks to optical communications and other applications. However, new types of laser technology are opening up new avenues of exploration in the 21st century. I will talk about cutting-edge physics projects that look to use very high intensity laser pulses as drivers for new types of particle accelerators and intense radiation light sources for society. Leading work in this field has been conducted out at Strathclyde for more than 20 years and the state-of-the-art user facility, the Scottish Centre for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators (SCAPA), carries this work forward. SCAPA houses two very high-power Ti:sapphire femtosecond lasers, including our so-called big laser at 350 TW peak power, to provide high energy particle beams and high brightness radiation pulses for users across all scientific and engineering disciplines.
Cheers,
Matt
