Dear all
Prof Giovanni Modugno from LENS and University of Florence will visit Strathclyde today and tomorrow, and will present a seminar in room 8.11 at 4pm tomorrow (this is the correct time and place, for those of you who noticed my mistake in the previous email).
If anyone wishes to arrange a time for discussions with Giovanni, there is still some space in the timetable, so please let me know.

Title: Measurement of the mobility edge in 3D Anderson localization
Date: 15/1/14
Time: 4 pm
Location: JA 8.11
Abstract: Several decades of studies of Anderson localization in disorder have confirmed that in 3D there is a critical energy, the mobility edge, separating localized states from diffusive one. An assessment of the mobility edge in a real system that can also be described by a microscopic Hamiltonian is however still missing, because of the challenging nature of the theory, simulations and experiments. We now employ a Bose-Einstein condensate in a disordered optical potential, where the control of the atom-atom interaction allows to produce a fully localized system with a narrow energy distribution. We then employ a modulation technique to produce a controlled excitation and from a study of the system losses we determine the position of the mobility edge. Our study reveals a peculiar dependence on the strength of disorder, which will be useful to constrain current theoretical studies of 3D Anderson localization.
