Title: Turbulent, spiral and rogue waves in coherent optical systems
Abstract:
Turbulence, vortices and rogue waves are typical of complex fluid dynamics. They can all be found, however, in nonlinear optical systems under the action of a coherent injection. Working on models of singly resonant optical parametric oscillators [1] and complex Ginzburg-Landau equations (used also to describe trapped Fermi gases) with injection we find two coexistent spatio-temporal regimes in 2D: one phase bounded [2] and one phase unbounded. Spatio-temporal rogue waves displaying heavily non-Gaussian probability density functions occur in the phase-unbounded regime. Their appearance is associated with defect-mediated turbulence where creation and annihilation of vortices (spiral waves) produce psychedelic patterns of the phase. Such turbulence is Miles away from stochastic superposition of random waves. Finally, we show that the finite size of the injection beams destabilises the phase-bounded regimes but leaves the phase-unbounded turbulence unaffected. We provide hints about possible experimental realisation, including optical injection in a large variety of broad-area lasers.
