Subject: You Are Invited to Earth Day 2015

I am writing to invite you to Earth Day 2015 at the University of Strathclyde in conjunction with the University of Strathclyde Students' Association. This event is open to all staff and students.

Earth Day 2015 is on April 22nd and takes place from 10.30am-4.30pm in the Insight Institute (formerly the Collins Gallery) but you can drop in to any session that interests you.

We are using Earth Day 2015 as a platform to represent sustainability throughout our University. Earth Day is used to promote environmental citizenship and action, worldwide. The University of Strathclyde are cultivating solutions to the current challenges including climate change. Earth Day @ Strathclyde will take students and staff on a journey of the steps being taken through the research showcases before exploring options on what more can be done and how.

Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Jim McDonald will welcome attendees before introducing one 30 minute presentation from each faculty exemplifying the fascinating research at Strathclyde that strives for a sustainable future. The day will end with interactive workshops for students and staff to discuss challenges and solutions.

11:00am-11:30pm: Scott Strachan, Peter Dauenhauer, Damien Frame (Engineering)  - 'Gambia Solar Energy Project'
11.30pm-12.00pm: Hannah Kyrke-Smith, Richard Bellingham, Lucy Sparks, Helen Kendrick (Business) - 'Global Sustainable Cities'
12:00pm-12:15pm: Tea Break
12:15pm-12:45pm: Christine Davidson (Science) - 'Heavy Metal Pollution in Urban Soils from Europe and Africa'
12.45pm-1.15pm: Clare McAlister and Monica Porciani (HaSS) - 'Scottish Government Policy on Sustainability in Education'
1.15pm-1.45pm: Estates - 'Improving solutions in carbon management; energy & water; recycling & waste; travel and biodiversity'
1:45pm-2:30pm Lunch
2:30pm-4:00pm: Student Staff Workshop
4:00pm-4:30pm: Student Staff Workshop Feedback

Your colleagues and students may be most interested in the 'Heavy Metal Pollution in Urban Soils from Europe and Africa' session. Christine Davidson from Pure and Applied Science will be unveiling the environmental impacts occurring through rapid urbanisation and comparing European and African urban soils to better understand the nature of this process.
