Subject: NPL Scotland – Emerging Theme Studentships 2015
Date: 5 June 2015 09:38:57 BST
Dear All,
Please find below a call for 2 studentships in Science for "emerging themes" in the partnership with NPL. 14 studentships have already been allocated to the five priority NPL Scotland themes as well as 2 for emerging themes. Please note that areas already funded through this initial trance are ineligible for this call (and the parallel one for 2 further studentships in Engineering).
I have sent this directly to a number of colleagues who I know are interested. I ask you to distribute further within your Departments as you see fit - all are welcome to apply if they satisfy the criteria, which include:
1. Existing engagement with NPL or LGC and fit with their research activity
2. Named co-supervisor from NPL or LGC, including a statement of support
3. Identification of added value to Strathclyde-NPL partnership likely to arise from the studentship
Regards,
Rob

Call for Proposals:
A total of 4 PhD studentships are available to support engagement in areas identified as “emerging themes” where Strathclyde wishes to build joint activities with NPL.
There are two studentships available from both the Science and Engineering Faculties. These fund 4 year PhDs and are at a value of £80,000 to support home/EU fees and standard EPSRC-level stipend, with approx. £5,000 remaining for travel and training purposes.
The emerging theme applications should demonstrate existing engagement with NPL or LGC research, including a statement of support from an NPL or LGC co-supervisor, as well as a clear route to bringing additional value to the developing partnership between Strathclyde and NPL and other partners.
The areas funded through the initial tranche of NPL Studentships are ineligible to apply for this call.
Assessment of the proposals will be undertaken by a cross-Faculty team to ensure consistency in assessment of quality, strategic fit and additional benefits. You are asked to discuss all potential applications with your Vice-Dean (Research) to ensure that it matches the Faculty’s strategy and emerging themes.
Deadline for submission:
All applications must be submitted to Rob Martin on the attached form by the deadline of 4pm on Thursday 25th June .
