[Physstaff] Fire Policy Change

FYI

Please be advised that as of 08.00 hours on Monday 17th August, the University will no longer request the attendance of the Fire & Rescue Service automatically on activation of a fire alarm.

The University currently has a number of buildings that have had an unacceptable number of unwanted fire alerts and as such, the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) have advised that in cases where fire alerts persist, their emergency response to the activations may be staged; a staged attendance is the initial dispatch of a single fire appliance at normal road speed, which is likely to significantly affect the insurance arrangements for the University.

In this connection, the University will now adopt a suitable procedure, whereby the fire alert will be investigated by Security Services to ascertain if the SFRS is required. You should note that the SFRS will be called without investigation if:
*             a 2222 call is made to Security Control confirm that there is a fire
*             on arrival, the Security Wardens are advised of a fire by those who have evacuated the building
*             a 999 call from a personal mobile telephone
*             the CCTV operator observes evidence that would suggest that there may be a fire

This procedure will run for a trial period of six months between the hours of:
*             JA Campus - 08.00 to 22.00 hours Monday to Friday
*             JH Campus - 24/7
