To Heads of Physics Departments

Dear Colleague

Professor Eli Yablonovitch’s 2015 Newton lecture and filmed profile are now available to view online here <http://www.iop.org/resources/videos/lectures/page_66650.html> .

Eli Yablonovitch was awarded the 2015 Newton medal ‘ for his visionary contributions to photonic nanostructures’ and is regarded as a founder of the field of photonics.

The Newton lecture was a superb exposition of the physics of photonics, how it allows us unprecedented control of light, and how its applications are proving to be central to societal challenges. I recommend both films to aspiring physics students. The interview beautifully illustrates the characteristics above and beyond intellect; resilience, persistence, creativity and self-belief, that are required to succeed in any field of endeavour.

I would be grateful if you could circulate this email to staff and students as you feel appropriate.

Daniel Lee will be emailing you this week with details of the next Heads of Physics meeting.

Regards

Philip
