Sent on behalf of Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal and Vice-Chancellor

Dear Colleague,

Following the UK's decision to leave the European Union, the Executive Team has taken a number of steps to ensure that Strathclyde's transition to the new arrangements will be as smooth as possible.

We have established the Strathclyde EU Exit Working and Advisory Group to coordinate our activity over the coming years. Chaired by Hugh Hall, this group will identify and assess the various opportunities and challenges for the University before and after the UK has negotiated an exit from the EU. The Group's Terms of Reference are attached for information.

In addition, we were pleased to note the former Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Mike Russell MSP, has been asked by the First Minister to take up the post of Minister for UK Negotiations on Scotland's Place in Europe. Mr Russell knows the HE sector well and clearly understands the important role universities continue to play in driving the economic future of Scotland.

While much of the media coverage around Brexit has been focused on the challenges and unknowns, there is no doubt that the years ahead will also present opportunities for Strathclyde. As a bold and innovative university, we are well-placed to identity and pursue these. It is up to each of us to uncover opportunities in our Faculties, Departments and Schools, and to work side-by-side with the Working and Advisory Group.

The November Leadership Group meeting will focus on the UK's Exit from the EU, which will give you an opportunity to engage directly on the topic. In addition, we are planning a series of staff briefings over the coming months to ensure everyone across the University is kept up to date with our preparations.

We have created a Brexit section on the staff intranet and have published a briefing for staff covering the main issues. It can be found here - https://www.strath.ac.uk/intranet/brexitbriefing/

Universities UK have produced an FAQ which begins to tackle some of the key questions for the HE sector. It can be found here - http://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/facts-and-stats/Pages/brexit-faq.aspx

We are realistic about the challenges facing the sector particularly around research funding, student recruitment and international collaborations and the status of colleagues from the EU staff. However, Brexit is the new 'norm' and institutions which adapt most quickly to the political and economic environment will be best placed to rise to the challenges ahead.

I have full confidence that Strathclyde will continue to thrive in the years ahead and that we will secure an environment that allows our University to continue to be well funded, global in its outlook, internationally networked and an attractive destination for talented people from across Europe.

Best wishes

Jim

Professor Sir Jim McDonald
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
