Seagate Laser Assisted HAMR Presentation
Seagate Northern Ireland’s Design Manager, Mark Gubbins, will be giving a presentation on the laser-assisted HAMR technology and its impact on magnetic storage production. He will also outline opportunities for recruitment at Seagate following their investment in expanding HAMR technology at their Derry plant (http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-foyle-west-29736119)
The presentation is aimed at PhD and Engd students but final year undergraduate students in the field of photonics and nanophotonics are welcome to attend. A brief Q&A session will be held at the end of the presentation.
Abstract:
Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) is the next-generation magnetic recording technology. We report significant areal density improvement over previous demos, showing HAMR recording at a higher linear density. It is an important milestone for the development of such a new technology. HAMR recording heads consist of advanced integrated photonic elements such as the plasmonic transducer allowing light to be focused to sub-50nm spot sizes and heating the disk in the HAMR hard drive to temperatures over 400C.
The talk will be held on 11 December, 12-1pm at the John Anderson Building, Room JA5.05
