Hi all,

SCOPE wants to know if you are interested in participating in a student-run Journal Club !

Reading and examining papers is a major task in our PhD work, and it can be valuable (and more fun) to do it as a group. From next January onward, we are proposing to start a "SCOPE Journal Club", open to all interested PhD students from Physics & the IoP, and running every 2 weeks. At each session, one paper of broad interest and significance would be read in common, following by a hopefully stimulating discussion - around cakes and juice for good measure.

As we are aware of the existence of other Journal Clubs in the department we are trying to offer something different. Firstly, it is completely student-run, so the discussion will be at a level suitable for all postgraduate students and with the scope of broaden our knowledge outside our topic. Secondly, we will keep the last ten minutes for discussion of day-to-day problems that all the students come across. So get ready to also have a stimulating debate about how to face your 3.5 years properly.

Given everyone's workload, we aim to keep this light and informal - each session would last approximately 1 hour. If you'd like to join, be ready to :
-          Discuss papers outside your immediate field of expertise;
-          Choose a suitable paper when it is your turn (everyone should understand and be able to participate in the discussion), and have a good read of it before the session so that you can help the rest with the discussion;
-          Comment figures with your mouth stuffed in chocolate;

Our first session will be on January 20, 4pm, in JA 8.11 - a SCOPE committee member will start us off so nothing to prepare.

Please let us know soon if you are interested!

Best regards,

SCOPE
