Subject: Collaboration in Physics - event for early career researchers, June 14th
Dear Shirley and Cath
Late last year you were kind enough to promote an event that I was running for the Institute of Physics in Edinburgh on funding for early career researchers.
I’m emailing in the hope that you might be able to do the same again with an event that is happening in three weeks time. This has been promoted through the IOP and SUPA networks but I suspect may not have reached all of your researchers. There’s a particular reason for encouraging them to come as I’m thrilled that one of our speakers is your own Professor Rob Martin!
Bookings and more details can be found here:
http://www.iop.org/events/careers/
The programme, with speakers, is below:
10.00 A Physicist’s Guide to Collaboration. An introduction to the new guide from the IOP, and a summary of its main messages.
10.30 Where does physics fit? An overview of a career in collaboration from Professor Jim Hough OBE, University of Glasgow
11.00 Getting it right from the beginning. Insights from Dr Kate Adamson, Marks and Clerk LLP on potential tensions and misunderstandings that can arise during collaboration, and ways to avoid them.
11.30 The research leader’s perspective. Professor Rob Martin, University of Strathclyde describes his perspective on successful collaborations and advice on good places to start developing your collaborative profile.
12.00 Taking the first steps. A chance to discuss the morning’s advice, question the speakers and think about the opportunities for collaboration available
12.30 Lunch
13.30 Collaboration across sectors. Dr Anne Pawsey, Edinburgh Complex Fluids Partnership on working effectively and to mutual benefit with commercial partners.
14.00 Collaboration checklist workshop. A short workshop giving you the chance to develop a personal collaboration checklist for your research.
14.45 What makes a winning collaboration. A summary of advice from the guide, including thoughts from funders.
15.00 Event close.
This will be the national launch of the Collaboration Guide - I’ve managed to squeeze in a Scottish event ahead of one planned in England in July so hope that some of your researchers will be able to join us to celebrate the great physics collaborations happening in Scotland and hear from local experts on how to boost their careers through working with others.
All the best
Sara
