Dear All,

This years' PhD Poster Competition, which runs as part of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science Programme is now open for applications. Please see below for information regarding this competition, who is eligible, some FAQ's and please also find attached the Application Terms and Conditions. The For Women In Science Fellowship recognises the achievements and contributions of exceptional females across the globe, by awarding promising scientists with Fellowships to help further their research.

We are calling on you to ask for your support in advertising this across your university or institute for your female PhD students to participate and apply. This is fantastic exposure for PhD students to both present their work and network at the For Women In Science Ceremony, which they would be invited to should they win.

What is the PhD Poster Competition?

A poster competition open to female PhD Students in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science and Maths to present their work on a poster at the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Ceremony at The Royal Society, London - 24th May 2018. To apply, you will need to write a maximum 300 word abstract and be available to present your poster on the 24th May 2018 17.00-21.00 at the Royal Society, London. Applications are open NOW (as of Monday 9th April 2018) and close at midday on Monday 23rd April 2018.

Please submit your application as a PDF document and email to ForWomenInScienceUK at loreal.com<mailto:ForWomenInScienceUK at loreal.com> by midday on Monday 23rd April 2018.

10 winners will be selected and all will be notified of the outcome by Friday 11th May 2018. Unfortunately, due to the high numbers of applications only successful applicants will be contacted.

Who is Eligible?


-       Applicants must be completing their PhD at a University or Research Institute within the UK or Ireland.

-       Applicants must be completing their research in the fields of life, physical or computer science, engineering or mathematics. Researchers in Psychology, science education and social sciences are not eligible to apply.

-       Applicants can be at any stage of their PhD; however they cannot have already completed their viva. Applications from Masters Students cannot be accepted.

-       Applicants must submit an abstract detailing their own findings. A review of others work will not be accepted.


Minimum Terms & Conditions

*UK & ROI PhD students only. Closes Monday 23rd April 2018. To enter please submit a 300 word abstract. Ten applicants will have the opportunity to present their poster at the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards. For Full T&C's please see the attached document.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have submitted my PhD thesis but I have not yet had my Viva, am I eligible to apply?
If your viva date is before the 4th May 2017, then unfortunately you are not eligible to apply.

Is there any financial support available to help me attend to present my research?
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide any assistance with travel expenses.

How long should the abstract be and what audience should it be aimed at?
The abstract should be no more than 300 words, excluding references and figure legends. The abstract should be aimed at a general scientific audience. If you are selected to present your poster, you will be describing your work to scientists from a range or fields as well as people without a scientific background.

Can I include figures in my abstract?
Yes you can include figures in your abstract.
