Maths Week Scotland Lecture

Guitar physicist, Dr Mark Lewney shall deliver a lecture entitled ‘Are We Made of Maths? The Philosophy of Maths and the Maths of Rock’ at Paisley Campus on Friday 14th September 2018, 6pm as part of Maths Week Scotland.
Maths Week Scotland is a Making Maths Count initiative that aims to promote mathematics and numeracy in Scotland.
Mathematics is a vital life skill, not only for young learners, but for parents, educators, and the entire population of Scotland. University of the West of Scotland recognises this, and is delighted to support the Making Maths Count initiative by welcoming colleagues to a special lecture, designed for all ages and all walks of life.
This lecture will see Dr Lewney introduce the maths of guitars, telecoms, ocean waves and life itself, and show how string vibrations might lie at the heart of the big questions about the universe.
What actually is maths? Does it exist independent of human minds? Is it invented, or discovered? Was there such a thing as ‘maths’ in the age of the dinosaurs? These are just some of the questions that Dr Lewney will tackle during his thought provoking and highly engaging lecture.
Commenting on the lecture Dr Lewney said: “I’m very excited to be visiting UWS for Maths Week in Scotland, a country close to my heart where I studied physics and which has a proud history of mathematical breakthroughs.”
Dr Mark Lewney, winner of the first ever FameLab® competition, has a PhD in guitar physics and has appeared on BBC’s One Show, Money Programme and Newsnight and was introduced on CBBC as 'a cross between Einstein and Jimi Hendrix”. He has toured the UK, Europe and the world with his “Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions” show and recently returned from touring Australia and New Zealand.
The event will take place in the Chancellor’s Hall at Paisley Campus. To secure a place please register at https://madeofmaths2018.eventbrite.co.uk
