Subject: PGR Reps Election for the academic year 2019/2020
Dear all,
Hope this email finds you well. I know it is a quite busy time of the semester welcoming the new PhD students to the university and their departments but just a quick reminder to inform your PGR students (new and current) that they have the opportunity to represent their department and get their voice heard.
As an action point on the ELIR Meeting, the Doctoral Researchers Group worked closely with the SDS management board and the student union the past academic year towards the following:
1. Ensure consistency among PGR representation system and structure across the university
2. Provide sufficient and customised training for all the new PGR reps – Planned to be delivered next month
3. Hold regular elections of PGR representatives at the start of each academic year (same as undergraduate elections)
4. Foster the right for all registered students to stand for election for the representation role in their department &/or Faculty
5. If an election is not possible, volunteers may be appointed to the role of department &/or faculty representatives with the agreement of the group of students that they will represent.
6. Departments/Schools should ensure they have at least one rep for every 40 - 50 students, up to a maximum of 4 reps in the department.
Just to note that if the previous PGR rep is still interested in representing the department for the new academic year, they still need to follow the procedure of expressing their interest to the rest of their colleagues and run elections fairly between all volunteers for the Rep Role.
It was highlighted in the PGR induction for new students last Thursday, that departmental rep roles are now open to all students if they are interested to volunteer and were advised to respond to the email they will receive from their departmental PGR administrator.
Just to highlight that faculty rep roles are still vacant for HASS and the business school.
It would be really helpful if you can get back to us with the names and email addresses for the new reps by the 30th of October, so we can start contacting the reps and organise their training in November.
Your help and support are much appreciated on this matter.
Have a great day 🙂
