Thank you for your extraordinary efforts.
Welcome to the final 2020 edition of Inside Strathclyde in which we look back at just some of the fantastic ways Strathclyders have been making a positive difference in what has been an exceptional year.
With 2020 drawing to a close, there is much to reflect upon. The COVID-19 pandemic has had an effect on all of our lives.
We have helped and supported each other, and responded to COVID-19 in a wide range of ways while moving forward in pursuit of our Vision 2025 goals.

Strathclyde academics respond to pandemic
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/57/c91fd45442ffe238c241f3.jpg]The pandemic demanded a massive research effort from the world's scientific community and Strathclyde was quick to respond.
Researchers from across the University have contributed in a number of ways, including to the development of vaccines, modelling of disease spread and examining the wider societal impacts of the pandemic.
Total COVID-19 related research income across all four faculties exceeds £3 million, and within our portfolio, we have been awarded over £1 million from the Chief Scientist's office, and just under £1 million from UKRI. Other funders include the NHS, Medical Research Scotland, H2020 and the Scottish Government.

[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/64/d818849c09b11dacfd9787.png]In a year of unprecedented change, the way that education was delivered experienced a seismic shift, and Strathclyders rose to the challenge.
Within days of being advised to work from home, teaching staff were using Zoom to offer classes online thanks to colleagues in the Learning Support Service and others.

Zoom boom ensured University stayed connected across lockdown
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/59/cda830592b816a2f4515c5.jpg]As the country faced down the first lockdown in March, plans were being fast tracked across the University for a rapid transition to the virtual meeting app Zoom.
With a shift to online learning on March 16, since then there have been more than 360,000 Zoom meetings by Strathclyders.
Learning Space Support Manager Campbell Jamieson reveals that the foundations were laid a year earlier when the University introduced the virtual meeting app on a trial with just a handful of ‘test’ users.

Access to buildings was only allowed for activities that were essential to fighting the virus outbreak.
For many of our teams, it was business as (un)usual – here's a round up of our stories from the frontline.

Update from Stella Matko, Director of Estates Services
[Stella Matko]This year has been very different for Estates Services. It has been exceptionally busy and very different for every section.
There have been many challenges and opportunities and we have all found new ways to deliver our services. Our mantra since March has been resilience, flexibility and teamwork.
It all changed in March, when the majority of Estates Services staff started working from home or stayed at home, with the exception of essential operational staff, namely mechanical and selected trades and Security Services.

[NHS workers thanking Strathclyde for food donations]The COVID-19 pandemic has been a genuinely global event, the like of which has not been seen since the Second World War.
No individual, no community has been unaffected, either by the virus itself or by the myriad effects of the efforts to contain it.
As an international university, Strathclyde is engaged in the worldwide campaign to address the medical, social and economic impact of COVID-19 – but we are also lending a hand to our local communities, supporting families, providing vital equipment to health workers and bringing work to businesses.

Contracts for face masks provided a lifeline for manufacturers
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/76/11270e956ff14027557f4d.jpg]As the pandemic took hold, the wearing of masks was first recommended, then compulsory. This inevitably gave rise to the question: where are we going to get them?
To ensure that supply matched the necessarily high demand, Strathclyde’s Procurement team secured the manufacturing services of two Scottish companies to make and deliver nearly 50,000 face coverings – giving them urgently-needed business in the process.

The Carers' Group: a vital source of support this year
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/69/f315bfe7da3ffdb0321caf.jpg]The Strathclyde Carers’ Group was launched in 2016 with the aim of providing support and advice to those of us who are caring for family or friends who need additional support.
Until March 2020 the Carers’ Group met regularly on campus but of course COVID-19 changed that.
The University recognised that carers might carry the additional burden of caring for those who were shielding as well as a concern for their health and well-being in a difficult and uncertain time.
Inge Fik, Chair of the Carer group and the HR team organised a weekly drop-in to provide a contact and support service that has run consistently since March.
Three of our carer colleagues tell us what the sessions mean to them.

The Risk and Resilience Team – at the frontline of the University’s COVID response
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/a3/9722e43f05c19476e6d16a.jpg]When Wuhan City in China experienced its first case of COVID-19 back in December 2019, no one really anticipated the global pandemic that has since followed.
For Strathclyde University’s Risk and Resilience team it has been a bit of a different year (to say the least), with many challenges faced along the way.
In January 2020, whilst watching the global spread of COVID-19, Pamela Loughlin, Risk and Resilience Manager, and her small team, along with colleagues from across the University, started to prepare for the eventuality of the virus arriving in the UK and for potential cases at Strathclyde.
What followed has been a journey and a half!

Creating alternative ways of providing advice and support during the pandemic
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/ba/ec6dcd8baccd39cc91c4c9.jpg]The International Student Support Team (ISST) offers guidance and information to all registered non-UK students and their families, especially those that concern immigration and personal issues. It also acts as a point of contact to other support services.
The team also arranges arrival and welcome activities for new international students during the main arrival periods in September and January although we have extended our service this year due to global travel restrictions.
Like many other teams, as of mid-March, ISST had to cease on-campus services until further notice. The four strong team immediately set to work to create alternative ways of providing advice and support.
Amanda McLean, Senior Student Adviser (Support), tells us more about how the team was able to adapt in a year which saw the number of students using the service double.

Changes from 1 January 2021
31 December 2020 sees the end of the Transition Period following the UK’s departure from the European Union on 31 January 2020.
This means that from 1 January 2021 there will be new rules which impact the way you purchase materials from the EU.
After this date, all goods brought into the UK will be subject to Duty and VAT. At present we benefit from the single market, which means no borders between EU countries and thus no Duty or VAT upon arrival.
This in no longer the case at the end of the Brexit Transition Period.

[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/d0/1d72e6e6b438b0aa3912fe.jpg]We are delighted to launch the Strathclyde Centre for Doctoral Training for Sustainable Development.
This SCDT will support the development of a research platform focused on the key cross cutting issues relating to sustainable development, which can be less effectively addressed in disciplinary silos, and will be looking to involve and include students from across the University with a focus or interest in sustainable development.
The endeavours of the SCDT will be as relevant to the UK and other higher income countries as to lower income countries.
We are making six studentships available with up to 50% funding support – details below.

Produced by researchers at Strathclyde and Bournemouth University.
A toolkit offering guidance on the responsible news reporting of suicide has been produced by researchers at the University of Strathclyde and Bournemouth University.
The Suicide Reporting Toolkit<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/18ncwnr0tf7xru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=58417748&t=31139333> advises journalists on ways to cover stories of people taking their own lives while avoiding sensationalism, stigmatization and putting other lives at risk.
It provides information on judicious use of statistics and social media posts, as well as on omitting unnecessary details, such as the method or location of a suicide, and offering details on sources of support.
Dr Sallyanne Duncan, a Senior Lecturer in Strathclyde’s School of Humanities, produced the toolkit with Dr Ann Luce, an Associate Professor in Bournemouth University’s Faculty of Media & Communication.

Project SEARCH is a one-year transition programme at Strathclyde which provides employability training and education for young people on the autistic spectrum or with learning disabilities.
As the host business, departments across the University would usually have provided placements for 10 interns, with positions ranging from IT support and lab assistant, to front-of-desk at the Technology and Innovation Centre.
Due to the pandemic these placements on campus couldn’t happen this year but the programme has continued, with eight new interns gaining work experience and employability skills in a virtual way.
Project SEARCH Job Coach Siobhan Martin tells us more and this year’s interns introduce themselves.
