The study, in which the University of Strathclyde is a partner, is the first to describe across an entire country the effect of the Pfizer and Oxford-AstraZeneca jabs in the community on preventing severe illness resulting in hospitalisation. Previous results about vaccine efficacy have come from clinical trials.
By the fourth week after receiving the initial dose, the Pfizer and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines were shown to reduce the risk of hospitalisation from COVID-19 in up to 85% and 94% respectively.

Sadly, last year’s events had to be cancelled at the last minute due to the pandemic.
Since then, wellbeing has become ever more important as we navigate the challenges of remote working and balancing our work and caring commitments.
This year, instead of Wellbeing Week, we’re going to be running a month-long campaign – Hello March!
In addition to the traditional photography competition we’ll be sharing healthy recipes and setting some challenges to help get us more active.

In 2020, over 300 teaching staff engaged 25,000 students across the UK in discussion around the SDGs and their relevance to their subject.

The Glasgow Early Treatment Arm Favipiravir (GETAFIX) study
University of Strathclyde researchers are assisting in a study to test a potential new COVID-19 treatment.
The Glasgow Early Treatment Arm Favipiravir (GETAFIX) study is researching the effects of the antiviral tablet Favipiravir on those in the early stages of the disease and whether it will help kill off the virus and prevent more serious complications.
The treatment, produced by Fujifilm Toyama Chemicals in Japan, can be taken at home and is intended for people with milder symptoms than those requiring hospital treatment.

Identify the role of digital collections in addressing the impact of the pandemic
The transfer of museum and gallery collections online during the COVID-19 pandemic is being investigated in research led at the University of Strathclyde.
Strathclyde is working with National Museums Scotland, National Galleries of Scotland and the University of Edinburgh to analyse the digital pathways of visitors to the gallery and museum websites during lockdown.
The study will aim to establish what attracts visitors, which pathways, such as search engines and arts platforms, lead to their engagement and how different stages of the pandemic have affected interaction.
Professor Gobinda Chowdhury, of Strathclyde’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences, is leading the study.

Strathclyde secures funding for low carbon SME projects
Partnership between the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise
Two projects involving the University of Strathclyde have received funding from Scottish Enterprise’s Low Carbon Challenge Fund<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/g2d440lf3f5xru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=58804985&t=31139333>.
The Low Carbon Challenge Fund is a partnership between the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise with total investment of £2.79 million with £1.39 million from the European Regional Development Fund and match-funding from the projects.
The University of Strathclyde is leading one project which will help the aerospace, rail and renewables sector to address the challenges around life extension and repurposing of assets and builds on linked projects.
Dr David Butler, Reader in the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management, said: “The project provides for timely intervention and support for SMEs who wish to engage the three sectors and benefit from the opportunities arising from aircraft decommissioning and the life time extension of rail rolling stock and onshore wind turbines."

Lord Ricketts has a distinguished diplomatic career, and spoke to many of the themes that inform the course. He was National Security Advisor 2010-2012, and Ambassador to France 2012-2016. Previously he was Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, UK Permanent Representative to NATO, and Head of the Diplomatic Service.

Self proclaimed 'Strathclyde addict' Rodge returned to the University in early 2020 as a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing.
He's also the Convener of the MLitt in Creative Writing, a course which he was a student on 20 years ago.
Having worked with, and written extensively about, the great Glaswegian polymath, Alasdair Gray (including an award winning biography), he is currently working on two major projects – an online International Gray Symposium this April 2021 and next year's 2nd International Alasdair Gray Conference.

Susan Kellie, PA to the Director, Marketing and Development Services, says: "I am very fortunate to live in a beautiful rural location. My companion (see below) enjoys walks by the River Endrick and the surrounding local hills, the Campsie Fells and the Trossachs.
"We were extremely lucky to see the Kingfisher sitting on a branch, rather than speeding away from us recently and the waterfall had become an ice sculpture during the recent cold snap."
