This is just the first in a range of Microsoft 365 products that will be rolled out as part of the Cloud Transformation Programme.

These free physiotherapy led Pilates classes are suitable for those recovering from injury, have a vulnerability, new to exercise or just want to try a new exercise that can be done at home.

The Strathclyde Pop Quiz Challenge

Going the distance for a much-missed colleague
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/95/3f09c1586f4eee11ba1d64.jpg]A team comprising members of Education Enhancement, Strategy and Policy and Student Experience is undertaking a charity step challenge in memory of a much-missed friend and colleague.
Alumna Samia Afzal, an Education Liaison Officer in SEES, was just 25 when she passed away from a brain tumour in 2019.
As part of Walk All Over Cancer month, the team is aiming to walk 2,102 miles, the distance from Glasgow to Istanbul, as Turkey was one of Samia's favourite holiday destinations.
The money raised will be donated to St Vincent's Hospice and Teenage Cancer Trust.

Up to £2,000 is available for successful applications to set-up and run VIP4SD projects that are able to engage student teams in research related to climate action as a means of actively contributing to Strathclyde’s COP26 legacy beyond the summit itself, which will take place in Glasgow between 1 and 12 November 2021.
The deadline is 15 April 2021.

A Scottish Government National Taskforce for Human Rights Leadership, co-chaired by a Strathclyde Professor, has made 30 recommendations to introduce a new human rights framework for Scotland.
The Taskforce, co-chaired by Professor Alan Miller and Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary, Shirley-Anne Somerville, which also included Strathclyde’s Professor Elisa Morgera as a member and Dr Elaine Webster on the Taskforce’s Advisory Panel, was established in early 2019.
Its task was to set out a new statutory framework to bring internationally recognised human rights into domestic law following Brexit which was understood to have weakened the present framework of human rights and social protections and which gave impetus to the need of a new framework.

To help improve the location accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)
Innovative techniques in the miniaturisation of optical atomic clocks are being developed in research involving the University of Strathclyde.
The new clock technology will help improve the location accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), as well as addressing the scalability of other quantum technologies.
Atomic clocks are the ultimate timekeepers, with the state-of-the-art instruments providing a timing accuracy that would neither gain nor lose a second in over 30 million years. Due to the high level of accuracy in these instruments, atomic clocks are used to coordinate systems that require extreme precision, such as GNSS.
Dr Paul Griffin, Senior Lecturer in Strathclyde’s Department of Physics is the University’s lead researcher for the project.

People with high levels of emotional intelligence are less likely to be susceptible to ‘fake news’, according to research at the University of Strathclyde.
The study invited participants to read a series of news items on social media and to ascertain whether they were real or fictitious, briefly describing the reasons for their answers. They were also asked to complete a test to determine their levels of emotional intelligence (EQ or emotional quotient) and were asked a number of questions when considering the veracity of each news item.
Dr Tony Anderson, Senior Teaching Fellow in Psychology and partner in the research, said: “Fake news on social media is now a matter of considerable public and governmental concern. Research on dealing with this issue is still in its infancy but recent studies have started to focus on the psychological factors which might make some individuals less susceptible to fake news."

Worrying trends between screen use and lower physical activity
Two-thirds of children use more than one screen at the same time after school, in the evenings and at weekends as part of increasingly sedentary lifestyles, according to a new study led by a researcher at the University of Strathclyde.
The study of more than 800 adolescent girls between the ages of 11 and 14 identified worrying trends between screen use and lower physical activity – including higher BMI (body mass index) – as well as less sleep.
The use of concurrent screens - termed ‘screen stacking’ - grew over the course of the week, with 59% of adolescents using two or more screens after school, 65% in the evenings, and 68% at weekends. Some teenagers reporting using as many as four screens at one time.
The study, published in the journal Acta Paediatrica, was led by Dr Deirdre Harrington, now of Strathclyde’s School of Psychological Sciences and Health, during her time at the University of Leicester.

A top criminal defence lawyer and human rights advocate who has instructed on some of Scotland’s most high profile cases is to become an Associate of the Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice (CYCJ).
Alumnus Aamer Anwar has dedicated his career to defending the human rights of the most vulnerable in our society, inspired by his personal experiences of racism and police brutality.
Academic Dr Johanne Miller will also join CYCJ as an Associate. As programme leader on the criminology and criminal justice degree at the University of the West of Scotland, Dr Miller has a robust background in youth work.

University lecturer Dr Jane Essex was 40 years old when she held her first conversation with her younger sister Emma.
Five years Jane’s junior, Emma has learning difficulties and is unable to speak as a result of a brain injury at birth.
Three times Jane and her mother, a single parent, had tried unsuccessfully to teach Makaton to Emma, a sign language designed to help those who cannot communicate effectively through speech.
Not a family to easily give up, they tried again. This time, on the fourth attempt, Emma successfully acquired the skill and was finally able to talk to Jane for the first time.
Her first words: ‘I love my sister’.
