Archives and Special Collections aim to collect a copy of each leaflet circulated across all constituencies in Scotland. To do this, we are asking everyone to send any leaflets you, friends or family receive.

To help the UK achieve its Net Zero goal
A project which takes inspiration from the fins of marine animals to design flexible material Wave Energy Converters is one of two led by Strathclyde to be awarded a share of £7.5m funding.
Researchers are developing and testing cutting-edge new wave energy technologies to help the UK achieve its Net Zero goal. A total of eight projects, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, part of UK Research and Innovation, will build on the UK’s leading role in marine wave energy to overcome challenges to develop devices that capture the energy generated by waves and convert it into a renewable source of electricity.
The Bionic Adaptive Stretchable Materials for Wave Energy Converters (BASM-WEC) study is a multi-disciplinary team led by Dr Qing Xiao from the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering.

A survey of more than 3000 workers reveals that fewer than one in ten wants to return to the office full time when COVID-19 restrictions are eased.
Preliminary analysis of the ‘Covid-19 and Working from Home Survey’<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/37obl4dn6lvxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=59056123&t=31139333>, shows that 78 per cent of respondents said they would prefer to work in the office for only two days or less. Almost a third – 31 per cent - said they would prefer not to spend any time at all in the office.
The study is co- authored by Professors Phil Taylor and Dora Scholarios from Strathclyde Business School and Professor Debra Howcroft from the University of Manchester.

Training for dealing with the mental health challenges of working from home is being offered by Psychology researchers at the University of Strathclyde.
The webinar sessions are designed to offer evidence-based advice on maintaining wellbeing and productivity while working from home and on planning for returning to work environments, as well as embracing different approaches.
The researchers offer guidance on setting boundaries between work and home life, keeping in touch with colleagues, maintaining effective team working, building resilience and pursuing healthy lifestyles.

Enabling the PNDC to expand its capabilities
The Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC), part of the University of Strathclyde, will receive £4.8M funding for pioneering equipment to help achieve the UK’s net zero ambitions.
The investment, from the Driving the Electric Revolution initiative at UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), will enable the PNDC to expand its capabilities by acquiring a high-power integrated electric propulsion and powertrain accelerator.
The funding is part of a critical financial boost to nine facilities across the UK, and ‘Driving the Electric Revolution Scotland’ is one of four innovative Industrialisation Centres aiming to achieve net zero carbon and lower emissions in the UK supply chain.

Exposure to older peers highly beneficial to early stage primary school pupils
New research shows that many school pupils who study in composite classes perform better than those in single year cohorts.
The study finds evidence that, for early years pupils, the gains created by composite classes are roughly equivalent to the attainment gap between the average pupil and a pupil in one of the 20% most deprived data zones in Scotland.
Composite classes – where children from different year groups are taught together – are widespread in Scotland in both urban and rural areas, with one in five primary school pupils in Scotland attending a composite class. These multi-grade classes are also common in the US and France.

Pattern of increasing socioeconomic inequalities
School absenteeism increased amid the COVID-19 pandemic in Scotland generally, and especially in more deprived areas, according to research at the University of Strathclyde.
The study found that the overall absence rate after the first wave of lockdown in 2020 was around 2.7% higher than in previous years. This increase was mainly due to COVID-19 related absences, while absence rates for other reasons were similar to those of previous years.
However, socio-economic disparity was also found to have increased in absences unrelated to the virus between the most and least deprived parts of Scotland.

The University of Strathclyde, Eni and Eni Corporate University have signed an agreement to develop and deliver a programme to help professionals and workforces working in the oil and gas sector in Scotland to transfer their skills to the renewable energy technologies.
The initial two-year Memorandum of Understanding aims to support the Scottish Government’s plans for Energy Transition by developing an innovative programme that builds on Eni’s experience in offshore operations and industrial know-how and on the University of Strathclyde’s world-leading expertise in the field of renewable energy.
The two partners also intend to expand the collaboration to research projects in offshore wind, in particular to support new technologies development such as floating wind.
