The summer 2021 graduation ceremonies at the Barony Hall will not be running due to COVID-19 and all students eligible to graduate will do so in absentia on Wednesday, 30 June 2021, and will be given the option to participate in a replacement graduation event in 2022.

The challenge is designed to help us all walk more during our work or study day by logging our steps in teams of five and setting mini challenges and targets each week.

Student Experience honour much loved colleague
In loving memory of Gianna

Gianna, who passed away peacefully at home with her family around her, was a valued and popular colleague who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

These include around 1500 desktop PCs in the Library and around the campus, and the Windows Virtual Desktop environment, which is available to all students and staff from home.
This year, the Windows Virtual Desktop has been our main delivery channel to give students access to around 100 specialist software applications.

Student Module Evaluation
Summer Term

Following the formal assessment period, updates will be made to the Quick Settings in Myplace to allow module leaders to activate and select dates for summer term evaluations.
In the meantime, any module leaders wishing to conduct evaluations starting before Wednesday 26 May 2021 should contact the Student Module Evaluation team at modules at surveys.strath.ac.uk<mailto:modules at surveys.strath.ac.uk> by Thursday 6 May.
The team can also help if some flexibility is required regarding the above evaluation dates.

Up to £2,000 is available for successful applications to set-up and run VIP4SD projects that are able to engage student teams in research related to climate action as a means of actively contributing to Strathclyde’s COP26 legacy beyond the summit itself, which will take place in Glasgow between 1 and 12 November 2021.

Celebrating business-academic knowledge exchange
Strathclyde scored a double success in this year’s Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards.
Professor Malcolm Macdonald was named Knowledge Exchange Champion, while the University was part of an innovative project to develop a pill for early diagnosis of bowel cancer symptoms which won the Multiparty Collaboration award.
Professor Macdonald was recognised in the annual awards which celebrate business-academic knowledge exchange for his work bridging the gap between academia, industry, and government.

Computer gaming technology is being used to develop and pilot two low cost, next-generation screening tools for ‘lazy eye’ in children.
NHS Forth Valley Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Iain Livingstone and Dr Mario Giardini, senior lecturer in the University of Strathclyde’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, have developed two prototype devices to test for ‘lazy eye’ in children who are too young to speak or follow instructions for a conventional eye test.

Study published in the Journal of Behavioural Addictions
Frequent use of social media may not amount to the same as addiction, according to research at the University of Strathclyde.
The study invited 100 participants to locate specific social media apps on a simulated smartphone screen as quickly and accurately as possible, while ignoring other apps. The participants were varied in the extent and type of their social media use and engagement.
The exercise aimed to assess whether social media users who reported the greatest level of use were more likely to have their attention drawn to the apps through a process known as ‘attentional bias,’ which is a recognised hallmark of addiction.
Dr David Robertson, a Lecturer in Psychology is a partner in the research.

Potential new treatment for life-threating vascular diseases
Researchers at the University of Strathclyde have received £377,000 from the Medical Research Council (MRC) to develop a bio-artificial artery to treat cardiovascular diseases.
The MRC New Investigator Award won by Dr Junxi Wu, Chancellor’s Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, will enable him to lead a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in vascular biology and bioengineering to develop a bio-artificial artery that mimics the natural artery.
If successful, the bio-artificial artery, created using only human cells and vascular matrix proteins and no synthetic materials, could be used in patients with cardiovascular disease to bypass blocked arteries.

The free app is based on research by Newcastle University and developed by a company called ADL Smartcare Ltd. It is based on a model of ageing which shows that as people age, they lose the ability to do everyday activities in a relatively predictable order if they age normally.

The University of Strathclyde has been announced as a member of the newly-launched UK-Singapore Universities Alliance for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (UKSAEI).
The alliance of 16 universities – 11 in the UK and five in Singapore – has been established to share knowledge and facilitate collaboration between institutions in the two countries.
Enabling knowledge exchanges on technology transfer and commercialisation, cross-border licensing of technologies, and training the next generation of entrepreneurs, the Alliance will boost efforts in accelerating ideas to market and value capture, and deepen cooperation between innovation ecosystems in the UK and Singapore.

Old wind turbine blades could be recycled and reused under plans being developed by Aker Offshore Wind, Aker Horizons and the University of Strathclyde.
The three organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at driving forward the development of recovery processes for used glass fibre products, including a novel process developed at Strathclyde.
Glass-reinforced polymer composites (GRP), used in wind turbine blades around the world, is recognized as a hard-to-break-down source of pollution. Today nearly all thermoset GRP scrap generated in the UK and Europe goes to landfill or energy from waste.

The ‘ProtoSEV’ design
Students from the University of Strathclyde Eco-Vehicle team (USEV) collaborated with their counterparts at the University of Aberdeen to design a futuristic hydrogen electric hybrid car in a 24-hour design sprint.
As they were unable to take part in his year’s Shell Eco-marathon competition<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/8jqtb33fiooxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=59236621&t=31139333>, the ten-strong group of students came up with the ‘ProtoSEV’ design - their vision of a car that could be seen on the road in the next 10 years.
The contest usually challenges students to design, build and test ultra-efficient energy efficient cars with teams testing their vehicles on tracks across Europe to find which vehicle can travel furthest on the least amount of fuel or fuel equivalent.
