Celebrating excellence in Scotland’s universities and colleges

Strathclyde was named the winner of the Outstanding Business Engagement in Universities award, for its work with NHS Lanarkshire in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and of the Marketing/PR Campaign of the Year Award, for its 1796 Minutes To Give fundraising campaign.
Strathclyde was shortlisted in a total of 10 categories in the awards, which are now in their sixth year and celebrate excellence in Scotland’s universities and colleges.

Supporting the city’s aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2030
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/88/cea5492f19ad10158811f8.jpg]The University of Strathclyde has pledged to help make Glasgow one of the greenest cities in Europe by becoming a signatory of The Sustainable Glasgow Charter.
The charter aims to support the city’s aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2030 and is part of the Glasgow City Council-led Sustainable Glasgow partnership, which aims to encourage Glasgow businesses to adopt more sustainable business practices.
It sets out how they can take action within their own organisations and sectors to help contribute to a green recovery as Glasgow looks towards becoming a Net-Zero Carbon City by 2030.

We’ve now reached a highly anticipated moment for the project, having held supplier presentations last week as part of the tendering process.
We hope to formally award the supplier in coming weeks, so while we’re still at a fairly early stage, it is an exciting one, and it seemed to be a nice moment to take a step back and reflect with one of our long-standing team members, Payroll Officer Sandra Higgins, as to how we’ve got to this point.

In addition to supporting engagement with external partners, she has also seen huge potential for the tool in the management of large-scale initiatives across the University.

Terminating unused connections

Connections showing no outgoing usage for the past six months shall shortly be receiving a SMS message from the provider advising that the connection shall be suspended after 30 days and, where no request is made to restore it, terminated 30 days after the suspension period begins.

Shows great commercial promise
Researchers are developing a rapid, low cost and mass manufacturable saliva-based biosensor test for COVID-19 inspired by the glucose test strips used to check blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
The team from the University of Strathclyde say that the test could eventually be mass manufactured for as little as 20 pence per test. It is designed for rapid in the field use, similar to a lateral flow test, to allow people in community settings to determine their COVID-19 status.
The lead investigator is Dr Damion Corrigan from the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

New analysis published by the Fraser of Allander Institute argues that the UK Government’s approach to prioritising local areas for resources from the Levelling Up Fund lacks transparency and is difficult to fully replicate.
The Institute's analysis also shows that the Government’s Levelling Up funding methodology uses indicators inconsistently within different parts of the UK. This means that the need for transport connectivity in rural areas in Scotland and Wales is not considered, whereas it is for England.

The free online course has been created for budding product designers to uncover and develop their creative talents.
The course will be led by University of Strathclyde Professor of Design, Paul Rodgers, who will guide students through the key stages of design – including research, identifying customer needs, concept design, making prototypes, testing, marketing, and selling.
