As the new Learning & Teaching Building prepares to open its doors for the new academic year, new video footage provides a sneak preview inside the building,



The two wings of the new building have been named after inspirational women: the B-listed former Architecture building will be called the Professor Mary Dunn Wing, in honour of Strathclyde’s first female professor and Head of Department, while the former Colville building will be named the Dame Jocelyn Bell-Burnell Wing in recognition of the renowned astrophysicist, first woman president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Institute of Physics, and honorary graduate of Strathclyde.



Both Wings are connected by a central outdoor events and gatherings space which will be named the Professor Jackie Kay Plaza, in honour of the celebrated poet, novelist and Strathclyde honorary graduate.

Strathclyde fourth in UK for student satisfaction, according to Times Higher Education<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/1rbxdjnx86xxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=1&p=59889758&t=31139365>


[Students at computers]The University of Strathclyde has been placed fourth in the UK for overall student satisfaction, following analysis of the 2021 National Student Survey by the Times Higher Education<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/lc121o3xzs0xru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=59889758&t=31139365>.



The University scored over 85%, significantly above the UK average of 75%, and moved up 28 places from last year on the THE list. The league table ranked 150 higher education institutions in the UK.



At the same time, Strathclyde’s detailed analysis of the results has shown that 30 subject areas are now in the top quartile for student satisfaction, doubling from 15 in 2019/20.

[COP26 logo]The Innovation Showcase Subgroup of the COP26 UK Universities Network<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/1e7merr723hxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=59889758&t=31139365> is organising a number of activities to showcase the ways in which innovations developed in UK universities, often in collaboration with partners in other countries or in industry, can be applied to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to the changing climate or inform climate action.



We have already invited submissions of “Images of Innovation” as platforms for showcasing the work being done in individual projects. Submissions have been reviewed and more than 120 successful entrants are updating their material for an online exhibition that we expect to launch in the first half of September.



We are now inviting proposals for additional activities to be included in the Innovation Showcase programme. Deadline for proposals: 30 August 2021

[Strathclyde Cares]The Widening Access Team are currently recruiting staff volunteers to mentor students in this September’s intake as part of the award-winning Strathclyde Cares programme.

An innovative £10M research project will investigate the potential of harnessing offshore wind and marine renewable energy to produce zero carbon hydrogen and ammonia fuels.



The University of Strathclyde will lead the multi-disciplinary Ocean-REFuel: Ocean Renewable Energy Fuels project, which will explore ways of converting ocean energy into fuels for use in heating, energy storage and difficult to decarbonise transport applications.



The news comes as the UK prepares to host COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference, in Glasgow and the consortium includes world-leading research teams from the Universities of Nottingham, Cardiff, Newcastle and Imperial College London. The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, industry, and the partner universities, who have also pledged a total of nine linked PhD studentships.

[milk bottles]A digital dairy project aiming to create 600 new jobs in South-West Scotland and Cumbria has been awarded more than £21 million of funding.



The University of Strathclyde is a partner in the Digital Dairy Value-Chain, which could generate an additional £60 million a year for a region which produces nearly two billion litres of milk annually.



The project team will work with the dairy industry to develop and implement technologies for sensing and data handling, as well as infrastructure to support innovation and growth for local businesses, nurturing young entrepreneurs and teaching and training of new skills and capabilities.

[Professor Roma Maguire]Remote 24-hour monitoring for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy shows a sizable, positive effect, helping to better manage side effects and improve quality of life, finds a study published by The BMJ today.



The researchers say remote monitoring can provide a safe, secure, and “real time” system that optimises symptom management and supports patients to remain at home - and is particularly relevant in the context of the covid-19 pandemic.



Effective symptom monitoring and management is essential during chemotherapy for cancer, but current approaches rely on patients recognising that symptoms are severe enough to warrant reporting to their care team.



Previous research on remote monitoring during chemotherapy has shown benefits, but is largely based on short trials from a single site or country, making it difficult to draw wider conclusions.
