Our renewable energy story

[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/71/018a4f216e40620bf6049c.jpg]As we look ahead to COP26 in Glasgow, this edition of Inside Strathclyde looks at how Strathclyders are playing a key role in delivering net zero.

We have always led on energy innovation which was recognised most recently when we were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education.

In this video our Principal, Professor Sir Jim McDonald, tells us more about about our renewable energy story, the challenges that lie ahead, and how Strathclyde is making a positive difference.

Colleagues and students taking action to make Strathclyde more sustainable

[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/53/c3bb1619703a04b557643c.png]Whilst structural change is required to tackle the climate crisis, we know that we all have a part to play through our everyday actions and behaviours.

Members of our Strathclyde community are leading this charge by committing every day to be sustainable, help the environment and improve their wellbeing through Sustainable Strathclyde’s Jump programme - so far, actions by staff and students on the programme have prevented nearly 83,000kg carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere, the equivalent of 16 return flights between London and Sydney.

Colleagues Iain Mitchell and Aileen Wilson in the Widening Access Team, Lesley Turan in Conferencing and Events, Michelle Nairn in CELCIS and Andrea Kozlowski, Civil & Environmental Engineering student, tell us why they joined the programme, what they have achieved so far and the lasting changes they have made in terms of sustainabilty within in their teams and as individuals.

Strathclyde-led project setting up sensor network in Glasgow

[M8 motorway, with traffic light trails underneath direction signage gantry]The world’s cities produce more than 70% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions making them instrumental to efforts to tackle climate change.

With a target to reach net zero by 2030, Glasgow is the pilot site for a project being led by Strathclyde researchers as part of the Global Environmental Measurement and Monitoring initiative which is establishing a dense network of 25 low-cost sensors that can measure greenhouse gases (GHGs) in real-time.

The researchers hope that by providing city leaders with up-to-date, high-resolution data they can help guide their decision-making on climate change mitigation policies and, crucially, allow them to see almost instantaneously whether they are working.

Tips from microplastics researchers Deonie and Steve Allen

[Dr Steve and Dr Deonie Allen]Drs Deonie and Steve Allen are microplastic researchers pushing the frontiers of environmental microplastic (MP) research.

The duo hunt down, quantify and characterise microplastic from air, soil, water and all sorts of other environmental samples in the search to find out how much microplastic there is in the world, where it is, and how it is getting there.

In this article they tell us why plastics are so bad for the environment and what you can do to reduce plastic waste.

This is so often presented as the ultimate manifestation of human ingenuity, and relied upon as the silver bullet of global solutions. But is this vision of technology blinding?

Call for support for Autumn ceremonies

[Graduation ceremony]As confirmed by the Principal in his staff update last week, in-person graduation ceremonies in The Barony will return next month from 15 to 26 November.

Professor Sir Jim McDonald said: "Graduations are one of the major highlights of the Strathclyde academic calendar and I am pleased that we will once again get together to celebrate our students’ dedication, hard work and success at the ceremonies next month.

"The last eighteen months have been very difficult for everyone and it will be a wonderful opportunity for Strathclyders to formally recognise student achievement on campus along with classmates and family members."

The graduations team<mailto:fiona.lynn at strath.ac.uk> is eager to hear from colleagues who are willing to help support these ceremonies and manage the flow of students around the Hall.

Call to participate in online research panel

[Scottish Government COVID Analysis Research Panel icon]The Scottish Government's COVID-19 Analysis Division is seeking participants to complete a short survey about their experience of COVID. The panel has provided an earlier warning of COVID re-emergence based upon changes in patterns of people meeting others, and given further robustness to the range of modelling the conduct.

The research panel aims to match the population of Scotland and they are in particular need of young people. If you take part, you'll be sent a survey every 2 weeks on: the number of people you've been in contact with, and your experiences of #coronavirus

People in Scotland are more likely than people in England to say that Britain is an unequal society, and are more likely to want to live in a more equal country, according to a chapter in the latest British Social Attitudes report <https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/1bw3h4ob50jw33np94yief/external?email=true&a=5&p=60546658&t=31139333> from the National Centre for Social Research<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/8615ncapdpxw33np94yief/external?email=true&a=5&p=60546658&t=31139333> (NatCen).

But attitudes towards social inequality and social justice in Scotland do not match those of the egalitarian-minded Nordic countries.

These are the findings of new analysis, written by Dr Chris Deeming from the department of Social Work & Social Policy at the University of Strathclyde and published by Britain’s largest independent social research organisation.

Survey is the largest study into the condition

Women experiencing severe vomiting during pregnancy have described how they were driven to termination, in research involving the University of Strathclyde.

A survey of more than 5000 women with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), published in the journal Obstetric Medicine, details the harrowing illness. The survey found 4.9% of women terminated a wanted pregnancy because of suffering from HG, while 52.1% of women had considered termination.

In June 2021, a group of adult learners from the Centre for Lifelong Learning (CLL) and students from the Department of Design and Manufacturing came together to work on unique eight-week pilot course ‘Design for All’.

In celebration of Glasgow being chosen by the UK to host COP26, the student pairs were asked to co-design and make 10 identical Glasgow souvenirs – under the theme of tackling climate change and protecting the planet for future generations – for conference delegates to take home.

Awareness session for all colleagues: 28 October and 10 November

Menopause is an inevitable stage of life. One in three women in the UK is going through or has reached the menopause and one in four say their symptoms affect their quality of life.

At Strathclyde, we want all colleagues to work in a supportive environment and to retain our experienced colleagues.

That is why we are launching a menopause policy.

You are invited to this webinar, delivered by Dinah Tobias of Blooming Menopause, to get an overview of menopause – why and how it happens. You will learn some of the common symptoms and how it can impact lifestyle and work.

A small team of facilitators will be there to discuss, advise, support, and work alongside you to consider how these approaches might work best for you and your students within your own discipline and context.

Fraser, a PhD student in the School of Government and Public Policy, began his Strathclyde journey back in 2013 as an undergraduate.

His research looks at the impact of local renewable energy systems on poverty and inequality in developed countries.

He tells us how growing up in poverty has influenced his work and why combatting the climate crisis will require us to reimagine pretty much everything we do.

Climate change and its impact on UK property
