Physics Benevolent Fund for PhD students

The Physics Benevolent Fund exists to offer financial help during tough times - including COVID-19 - and can assist individuals and their dependants hit by financial worries and difficulties brought on by a range of factors including the loss of a job, illness or to provide support for issues during PhD study. This can include help with costs arising from travel to international research institutions, conferences or for visits to other researchers relevant to PhD studies where no other financial support is available.

We would encourage you to share the details of the Fund with your PhD students. Under exceptional circumstances, we are also able to support other students experiencing severe financial hardship for reasons that could not have been foreseen when they began their studies, but with an expectation that the university would also be providing support. In all cases, applicants must be an established member of the IOP, and/or a member of IPEM, or the dependant of a member of either organisation. However, in certain cases, the Trustees can consider funding for those who are eligible for membership of either the IOP or IPEM but are unable to afford to take out membership at this time.
