Exhibition and vote now open

This year’s exhibition, Hope for humanity, is now on display at its new venue, the Mitchell Library.
Formally opened by the Principal on Tuesday 2 May, as part of Engage with Strathclyde, the exhibition is already proving hugely popular with the public.
The four category winners have been announced and now it is over to you to pick your favourite – the vote closes on 18 June.

[Emeritus Professor Chengi Kuo,]
Emeritus Professor Chengi Kuo, Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering, has received the Royal Institution of Naval Architects’ (RINA) William Froude Medal, in recognition of his significant contribution to the field in a career spanning more than 50 years.
Professor Kuo joined Strathclyde in 1967 and his areas of expertise include ship safety and stability, the use of computer technology in shipping, and ship support for subsea operations in the oil and gas sector.

Following an extensive international search, Strathclyde has appointed Ton Kloosterman as its first ever Director of Water Polo.
Ton joined the University in February 2023 from the Dutch (KNZB) High-Performance Water Polo Regional Talent Centre in Zaandam, where he coached talented water polo children alongside their school commitments.

A joint UK-EU project to develop retrofit carbon capture solutions and other technologies for ships to reduce their emissions and fuel consumption has got underway.
The Green Marine project, led by the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute. CMMI, brings together 10 partners from industry and academia from all over Europe and UK, including the University of Strathclyde’s Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering.

Researchers at the University of Strathclyde have been working with an energy storage company to improve the efficiency of an innovative battery that could offer reliable, low-cost, low carbon power to homes and businesses in sub-Saharan Africa.
The project produced results which could reduce production costs by more than half, and by as much as 70%.

[Inspire Summer Founder Fellowship]
The new Fellowship will provide five early-stage student entrepreneurs with grant funding to cover their personal expenses over the three-month period of June-September, as well as a £3k grant to be used for the development of their business idea.
In return, the Founder Fellow is expected to spend the majority of their time developing the business, proactively engage with Strathclyde Inspire’s Start Up Team to drive forward the testing and development of their idea, and have a regular presence in the Inspire Hub.

They will be running their ‘Beyond Religion and Belief’ training session which is open to all staff at the University.
