Hi everyone,

I would like to thank those who came along to the opening of this years guest lecture series. I am happy to announce that next weeks talk will be our first industry speaker of the series, Dr Kirsty Annand (QuantIC and Opening Up Photonics).

The title for Kirsty's talk is "Beyond Academia: Navigating Career Options After Your PhD". This talk will be a fun and informative exploration of what options lie open to physics graduates other than the traditional academic career path. The title singles out PhD students but this talk will still be of great interest to any undergraduate or postgraduate student who is interested in careers outside academia.

As programme manager for the NQTPs Quantum Hub in Enhanced Imaging (QuantIC), Kirsty is responsible for coordinating delivery of the centre across 7 UK partner HEIs and 60+ UK-based companies to revolutionise imaging across industrial, consumer and scientific markets.

Kirsty is responsible for day to day operation of the hub and creating a cohesive team of researchers at all career stages. As QuantIC nears completion of its second phase, its research has produced over 1500 scientific papers with 50 amongst the worlds top 1% most highly cited, led 5 new spin out companies, obtained 8 early career fellowships supporting our leaders of tomorrow and lies at the heart of £60 million of industrial cofunded projects.

Kirsty has a physics PhD from the University of Glasgow, and is founder of Opening Up Photonics, a platform supporting the UK quantum, photonics and optics industry to discuss, challenge and address as a community, barriers faced by minority groups, with the aim of increasing accessibility, championing diversity, and ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment for all.

Join us on 8th October 2024 in the teaching and learning building (TL423) at the slightly later time of 5.30pm!

All the best,

Matt
