Hi everyone,

We have a special treat lined up this week for the Physics Society guest lecture. Prof Marcus Scheck will be joining us from the University of the West of Scotland for evening discussion on the topic of nuclear physics and it's applications. This talk will be in the learning and teaching building (TL423) at 5.30pm on the 5th November. This will be a gentle introduction to a interesting area of physics. Open to all students and staff. Please see below for more details!

Title: "Nuclear Physics - Why Would Anyone Do Such a Thing?"

Abstract:

"This talk aims to introduce a few fundamental concepts of nuclear physics, provide a few examples of current applications as well as recent finding, which in the coming decade will require the modification of currently available textbooks.

Examples for development in applications are Theranostics (Therapy and Diagnosis) for cancer treatment, nuclear mass measurements, as well as the development of nuclear clocks based on 229-thorium. Recent research developments as type-I and type-II evolution of the nuclear shell structure will be elucidated in a conceptual approach as well as concept of nuclear shapes and shape coexistence introduced.

In the unlikely case that at the end of the talk some time left, the role of nuclei in stars is introduced together with recent developments in the field of nuclear astrophysics."

Hope to see you all there!

Thanks,

Matt
