Hi all,
some interesting engagement opportunities in the attached email, originally from the Scottish branch of the Institute of Physics. If you think you might be able to contribute but are unsure how then I’m happy to chat. Otherwise, you can go directly the Mikey Jarrell – Michael.Jarrell at iop.org<mailto:Michael.Jarrell at iop.org>.
Best,
Griff

Dear all,
There are three projects in touch with IOP Scotland who are looking for physicist partners (you can be at any career stage or in any discipline).
Falling Up would be suitable for pretty much anyone with a good understanding of Newtonian physics, Meta Makers might be best for somebody with an interest in education. The third one would suit somebody with an interest in heritage and/or the Highlands.
1. Falling Up
Devised by an aerial acrobat, this project will be a fusion between a physics lecture and a trapeze act. It will be created as a short video, with the option to perform as a live act when Covid restrictions are lifted. The piece will explain theories of movement and gravity as they relate to the movements of a trapeze artist. The theories will be explained orally by the artist, and she will accompany these explanations with a physical demonstration. This piece appeals to a wide range of audiences, but it would be an especially fun way to learn about physics for secondary school age young people, or for people who have not had much involvement or interest in physics so far. The artist would like to work together with a physicist to understand what is happening during their motion. They have already submitted an application for funding.
1. Meta-Makers Innovation Lab
A new project by City of Play<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thecityofplay.co.uk%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cpaul.griffin%40STRATH.AC.UK%7C0c2b7dca65194c73dcc208d8e8671ae4%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637514876835668441%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=5ij5F8YEW674Uo2RHnK62p1RYo%2FVdv3dYnx6q4evrUU%3D&reserved=0>, this is a forthcoming creative education programme for children and young people, funded by the National Lottery. The programme is being designed to develop vital ‘Meta-Skills’ in Children and Young People by delivering an inclusive, novel, practical and primarily playful approach to the exploration of Creative Processes, Design, Architecture, Engineering and Planning. A series of semi-structured pilot workshops with young people are being developed, and they are keen to collaborate with physicists to develop more physics-oriented learning, and perhaps extend their pilot programme with a new physics-based workshop. They have not yet applied for extra funding from the IOPS grant scheme, and are looking for a physicist to help them to complete the application.
1. Untitled
An idea from an artist and writer working on issues in the Highlands, this project is not yet formed. The artist is looking for a physicist with interest in the impact that the Highlands has on physics, to help them to shape a piece of work for exhibition in the Highlands – perhaps at the Gairloch Museum. The format of the work, as well as the final themes, would be decided in collaboration, so this is a fantastic opportunity to really shape a piece of public engagement work. The idea was born when the artist noticed the symbiotic relationship the Highlands has with physics - be it through Fred Hoyle’s passion for bagging Munroes, Charles Wilson's capturing of clouds, or the many and various in and out of commission military installations.
This applicant has not yet submitted an application for funding, and are looking for a physicist to help them to complete the application.
If you are interested in learning more, or want to get involved, please contact Mikey Jarrell<mailto:Michael.Jarrell at iop.org> at the IOP.
Best wishes
Vicky
