Dear Colleagues,

I'm writing to advertise a two-year postdoctoral position at Oxford. I'd be very grateful if you could bring this to the attention of students or postdocs that you think might be interested.

I'm particularly interested in candidates who have some experience with DMRG, QMC, or other numerical techniques, but any strong candidate with overlapping interests in topological phases and strong correlations will be considered. The start date is relatively flexible, but the maximum end date is that of my ERC grant, on Sept 30, 2024.

Note that the application deadline of 10 January 2022 is slightly on the late side since it took some time to agree a grant extension with the ERC. Given this, I hope to make a decision by the end of January or sooner, in line with many other positions.

The advertisement is posted on AJO [https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/20706<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Facademicjobsonline.org%2Fajo%2Fjobs%2F20706&data=04%7C01%7Candrew.daley%40strath.ac.uk%7Ccb1fd0aff1cd4fea6b4708d9bd5fe050%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637749042498399091%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=%2BtnDOEo6%2BHCP2z%2F%2BvFHIb80H5I7gOQpmwl3Z80xqleQ%3D&reserved=0>], but applications will be accepted only via the Oxford HR system [link: https://tinyurl.com/mrxd98p3<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2Fmrxd98p3&data=04%7C01%7Candrew.daley%40strath.ac.uk%7Ccb1fd0aff1cd4fea6b4708d9bd5fe050%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637749042498409047%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=gD9fbioP9i%2Fs3y627wGLV3xe24RlmT%2BEjCp09CxHo3s%3D&reserved=0>]; letters of reference must be emailed. A copy of the advertisement with the relevant application instructions is provided below.

I apologize if you receive multiple copies of this email.

Sincerely,
Sid Parameswaran

Post-doctoral Research Associate in Quantum Condensed Matter Theory
The Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics, Clarendon Laboratory, Department of Physics
Grade 7: £33,309 - £40,927 p.a.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to perform research on the theory of condensed matter working primarily with Professor S A Parameswaran. The position is supported from an ERC Starting grant on Topological Matter and Crystalline Symmetries.

The post is available for a fixed-term period of 2 years starting on 1 October 2022 (or mutually agreed date shortly before/after). The successful candidate will work in collaboration with Prof. Parameswaran on research supported by the grant, but will also have the ability to interact and/or collaborate with other members of the quantum condensed matter theory group.

The position allows considerable flexibility in research topics, but the grant has as its main theme the interplay of topological properties, emergent gauge structures, and crystal symmetries in strongly correlated systems, examined using both analytical and numerical techniques.

Postholders are expected to conduct research in collaboration with Prof. Parameswaran and other members of the theoretical condensed matter physics group at Oxford University. Duties will include carrying out research in theoretical physics within the general areas supported by the ERC grant; related tasks will include collaborating in the preparation of reports and journal articles, presenting papers at conferences and workshops, and representing the group at meetings / seminars. The post-holders will have the opportunity to teach. The successful candidates will hold (or be about to complete) a PhD/DPhil in physics, or a closely related field.

We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
— topological aspects of quantum condensed matter physics, particularly as applied to interacting systems
— quantum field theory methods, particularly nonperturbative techniques, symmetries, and dualities
— numerical tensor-network methods applied to correlated systems in two dimensions.

As it is also envisaged that a subset of the research projects will have a strong link to experiment, and may involve close collaboration with experimental groups both at Oxford and elsewhere, previous experience of such collaboration is highly desirable. Further particulars for this position are provided below.

The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

You will be required to upload a CV (including a list of publications) and a brief statement of research interests as part of your application. You will also be asked to provide details of at least two referees. Candidates should ensure that referees submit all references to CMTreferences at physics.ox.ac.uk<mailto:CMTreferences at physics.ox.ac.uk> by the closing date. Documents submitted should be in PDF format and use the naming convention: APPLICANT SURNAME,FORENAME - REFEREE SURNAME,FORENAME”.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Prof. Parameswaran at sid.parameswaran at physics.ox.ac.uk<mailto:sid.parameswaran at physics.ox.ac.uk>.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Monday 10th January 2022. The University of Oxford and Department of Physics are Athena SWAN Silver Award holders.
