As we approach the end of the first week of second semester teaching, it is time to remind all supervisors (and their surrogates) of the assessment criteria and timetable for the student projects. There was no official mock viva for project students this year, so do let me know if you regard any of your students to be 'at risk' at the present time.

You should note the following dates in your calendar app. and let me know asap of any potential clashes with your other activities:

20th and 27th March 2013
Project Talks 1-5 pm in parallel Sessions
Each student will be given a 15-minute slot. The expectation is that students will talk about their project for 10 minutes and then be questioned by the audience for 5 minutes.

15th April 2013: Project report submission
Project reports are to be submitted in PDF format through MyPlace and passed through Turnitin for plagiarism detection.

Week beginning 29th April 2013 (revision week)
Project vivas to be arranged.

I have attached the mark sheets and guidelines used for marking the various parts of the project.

The contribution of each part to the final mark is:

For PH450
Project report 50%

Supervisor’s Assessment 20%

Project Viva 20%

Project Talk 10%

For PH550
Project report 30%

Supervisor’s assessment 30%

Project viva 30%

Project talk 10%

The projects form an important part of each student's education and development as a physicist, and can occasionally teach supervisors a thing or two. I'm looking forward to the completion of another successful round.

Good luck,

Kevin
