Dear Professor Hunter,
Please see the below invitation to a forthcoming seminar on women in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. I would be grateful if you could forward this around colleagues and students within your department at the University of Strathclyde.
Thank you and best wishes,
Liz Hemsley.
You are invited to ….
Revisiting ‘Tapping all our Talents’
at the RSE on Tuesday, 23 April 2013

In April last year, the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) published its report ‘Tapping all our Talents’.<http://www.royalsoced.org.uk/cms/files/advice-papers/inquiry/women_in_stem/tapping_talents.pdf>
In our report we drew attention to the high percentage of female graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) who leave these sectors. We made the case for a strategic
and coordinated approach to tackling this issue and called for a Programme of Action that included
specific recommendations to government, research councils and other funders, universities and
research institutes, business and industry, and learned and professional bodies.

Together with the Scottish Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology
at Edinburgh Napier University, the RSE is now hosting a seminar on Scotland’s strategy for lifting
barriers to women in STEM. This seminar will focus on the progress that organisations within
Scotland have made towards this goal, and identify areas that still need to be addressed.
Speakers will include:
> Professor Lesley Yellowlees, President of the Royal Society of Chemistry,
> Mark Batho, Chief Executive of the Scottish Funding Council,
> Ann Henderson of the Scottish Trade Unions Congress,
> Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport and
> Dr Elaine Murray MSP.
The event will be chaired by Professor Fiona MacKay of the University of Edinburgh.
You are cordially invited to attend this seminar, which will take place on Tuesday 23 April,
10.30am–12.30pm at the RSE’s offices in George Street.
Tea and Coffee will be available from 10am and a buffet lunch will be provided after the seminar.
