Dear HoDs,

As part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations for the University we asked
Departments to suggest ideas for events we could hold in the Faculty. Dr
Christine Davidson (PAC) suggested we could work in collaboration with
the British National Science Fiction Convention which will be in
Glasgow in April, please see below for further details:

*Strathclyde Golden Jubilee event at the 2014 British National Science
Fiction Convention*

The 2014 British National Science Fiction convention -- Satellite 4 --
will take place in the Crowne Plaza hotel, Glasgow, over the Easter Bank
Holiday weekend (18^th -21^st April 2014). Satellite 4 is a genre arts
festival, featuring a multi-stream programme of guest speakers, panel
discussions, readings, workshops, games, and other events, expected to
attract some 900 members. More information can be found at
www.satellite4.org.uk <http://www.satellite4.org.uk>

Each year the convention has a different theme, decided by the local
organising committee. In 2014, the emphasis will be on the interface
between science fact and science fiction. There will be programme items
exploring how developments in real-world science inform literature, and
how science fiction sometimes becomes science fact.

As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, Science Faculty has agreed
to host a mini-symposium at the convention showcasing some of the
cutting edge science taking place at Strathclyde. This will take place
on Monday 21^st April 2014. We are looking to recruit 2 or 3
enthusiastic and dynamic speakers, preferably from different
departments, to give presentations on recent developments in their
research areas. The convention membership will consist mainly of science
fiction fans, authors, and publishers. Hence, the talks should be at a
level accessible to members of the public with a general interest in
science but no specialist knowledge.

Speakers will receive a day membership of Satellite 4, allowing them to
attend all the events taking place on the Monday of the convention.

I would be grateful if you suggest any colleagues in your Department who
you think may fit the bill. We wondered if Teaching Award Winners (last
year in Science they were Owain Millington and Christine Dufes) would be
suitable candidates? If you could forward me any suggestions for
speakers by next Wednesday, 12th February, that would be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Christine.
