See message below from Christine Dowds regarding funded Saudi PhD
students - if anyone is interested in the external supervision scheme
mentioned then please let me or Christine know.

There is no restriction on subject area but the practicalities of the
external supervision scheme probably suit theory/computation projects
more than experimental ones.

Gordon

Dear all,

Please see an email below from Elizabeth Ellis.

Best wishes,

Christine.

To: HoDs and PGR Selectors in the Science Faculty

Last week I visited Saudi Arabia and Oman where I met with applicants
that expressed an interest in studying for a PhD with us. They fall into
two main categories:

  * Standard applicants, who will come to Strathclyde for a 3 year PhD,
    *fully-funded* by Saudi Government.
  * External supervision applicants from Princess Nora University, King
Saud University and King Abdulaziz University. Most of these
applicants will be female members of lecturing staff who are funded
by their home University. They will carry out their research at
their home university under our supervision, they will pay
international tuition fees to Strathclyde for the whole of their
PhD, and will submit a thesis for a Strathclyde PhD. They will
visit to Strathclyde twice a year and in addition, the Strathclyde
supervisor is required to travel to Saudi Arabia for short visits up
to twice a year, for which business class flights and hotel
    accommodation will be provided.

For both types, the prospective applicants have been given the Faculty's
list of research topics, and directed to departmental web-pages with a
view to them identifying potential supervisors and research areas before
they complete the formal application form.

Could you please alert all academic staff in your departments to these
opportuntiies? In particular, the information about the External
Supervision scheme as potential applicants may contact them directly.

If any member of staff requires further information they are very
welcome to contact me.

Thanks

Elizabeth
