Dear Heads
Members of the Faculty Management Team were somewhat dismayed by the e-mail below, as we don’t think it’s reasonable that matched funding be sought at this late stage in the financial year. There has been some discussion w Scott on this point and he has made it clear that he understands that colleagues may not have identified external partners who could contribute part-funding to this scheme in summer 2015; in other words, it will be acceptable to seek 100% funding from the Uni. However, Rob asks that colleagues make appropriate efforts to obtain funding from external partners, as part of our overall research and KE activities.

Message sent on behalf of Professor Scott MacGregor, Vice Principal
Dear Colleagues
RESEARCH INTERNS @ STRATHCLYDE (RI at S) PROGRAMME
As you may know, the RI at S programme has been running for over 5 years now, which along with the Carnegie internships, has enabled 40 – 50 students each year to experience a research internship in the summer of their penultimate year.
The goal of RI at S has always been to provide direct experience in the research environment for undergraduates who might be considering a career in academia. The RI at S programme provide students with hands on insight into the breadth of opportunity in research and contributes to supporting a research informed education. Along with similar discipline-led internship initiatives, the RI at S programme aligns with our strategic priority of increasing our post-graduate population. Recent evaluation of the students participating in the RI at S programme has highlighted the collective impact that these interventions can have in real terms. Through our combined efforts to increase the numbers of our graduates progressing into postgraduate study and research, the destination statistics for internship participants reflect an upward trajectory of progression into postgraduate study (42% over 3 years) and postgraduate research (21%). Taken together with the overwhelmingly positive feedback on the RI at S programme experience, from both supervisors and interns, the University is committed to continuing the programme on an annual basis.
Over the lifetime of the programme so far, funding has been provided on a development basis from the Education Excellence Fund. Along with the contribution made by the range of awards (Carnegie, EPSRC etc) that our students have been successful in obtaining, this has enabled close to 200 students to benefit from the experience of undertaking a significant research project.
We are keen to see an increase in the numbers of students that are provided with this opportunity, across all of our Faculties. To this end, we are embedding continuous programme funding and looking to integrate the RI at S programme with the range of student internship opportunities already in place across schools and departments. We have been liaising with Faculties to collate information on similar initiatives that are in place.
You were recently notified that the process for applications for summer 2015 has commenced, with the new online application process having opened this week. Within the online application, you will note a change to the procedure relating to funding. In order to stimulate growth in RI at S numbers, the internship programme will be seeking a contribution from Dept/School/Faculty/Industry sources; this will be used to increase the number of internship opportunities that we are able to provide. The application process now requires indication of the percentage of central funding being sought. Nominations from departments will be reviewed by a cross-institution panel and departments advised of the outcome via the panel.
The summer 2015 online application round is now open at: http://www.strath.ac.uk/undergraduatescholarships/interns/
I would like to thank everyone for contributing to the success of this programme over the past 5 years and I look forward to seeing another cohort of students being inspired by research internships to pursue a long term career in research.
Yours sincerely,
Professor S J MacGregor
