Dear All,

We're rapidly coming up to the beginning of the new academic year and it is crucial that we have enough projects for the 4th year students. Due to rising student numbers, we will need approximately 100 projects for 4th year students (up from 83 expected last year). This will require everyone to help pitch in with project titles (many thanks to those already carrying more than their fair share).

As reference I have attached a list of existing project titles together with ongoing 5th year projects and last year's booklet with descriptions. Please confirm whether you will continue to offer the same projects for this year, advise of any changes (e.g. updated supervisors) and any new projects. Please fill in the project detail form (also attached) for altered or new projects.

Note: The Project Description template has been updated with a section on recommended classes or pre-requisites for the student. For unchanged existing projects, just let us know what should be in the section of your project description so that we can add it to the booklet.

I ask that you send this information to me by the Friday 21st August 2015, We require your project information as soon as possible to balance the scope and number of projects across the divisions/theory/experiment, compile the booklet, and for students to begin selecting their topics.

To cope with the extra number of students, we ask staff to consider:

- Offering more projects

- Offering a project to be taken by a pair of students

- Offering a project title to a 4th year student that is already being taken by a 5th year student

There may also be some 4th years reattending whose personal circumstances mean they get the same project again.

New staff especially, please consider offering a few topics. You may want to have a more experienced staff member as 2nd supervisor to help become familiar with procedures. The 1st supervisor can be an academic, senior research fellow, Chancellor's Fellow or similar (i.e. if you are allowed to supervise PhD students, you can be a 1st supervisor on an undergraduate project). The 2nd supervisor can be any of the previous or a post-doc.

Thanks,

Daniel

PH450 Projects Co-ordinator (taking over from Kevin).
