Dear Heads of Department and Directors of Teaching

The attached draft design of the Academic Year 2016-17 will be presented at Senate on Wednesday next week The one absolute was that examinations would be before Christmas. All of your comments and concerns were fully represented as were those of the other faculties.  The outcome, as you might expect, is a compromise.

The proposal is that the first day of teaching in semester 1 is Monday 19th September. The week before that however will be a Welcome and Development week which can be used flexibly (in Science perhaps for lab classes). There would only be two weeks for revision and exams before the first diet and this is a very narrow window. For those departments with a high number of exams in this diet you may need to consider completing delivery in week 10 to accommodate revision in week 11. The marking deadline is the end of January so hopefully staff would not have concerns about this deadline.

In second semester there is again a flexible Consolidation and Development week at the start and no issues, as far as I can see with revision and examination processes at the end of the semester. I thought that I would share this with you now so that those of you on Senate have the opportunity to consult with colleagues. If there are any points of clarification required please don?t hesitate to get in touch.
