Subject: Walk out: National Day of Solidarity, November 17

Dear Dean and Vice Dean Academics

Strathclyde students passed a policy for its members to participate in the National day of solidarity with NUS.

On 17th November at 10.30 am, our students will take action with all students in the country with colleges and universities to walkout in solidarity, and to show support for international students and the wider migrant community.
• We are doing this in order to make international students feel welcome in the country and show that the wider student movement and student population cares about international students, and they are an integral part of the student body. The government have been very unwelcoming, and the wider student movement is behind them and is willing to take action to support them.
• The walkout us also aimed to show the government that we are unhappy with the attitude towards migrants in the country, including refugees.
• We are also doing this to raise awareness to the students, staff, and lecturers of the issues that are affecting international students.

We ask that staff members and lecturers support our students in any way that they can. We ask that lecturers
1. facilitate students that are walking out of their class
2. take register/attendance before 10.30 am on the day
3. don’t penalise students if they are taking a political stance on the issue
4. if possible, to not have any important lectures or laboratories at the time

On the day, students will leave their classes, and get together in Rottenrow gardens, where leaflets and information will be given on the different issues that international students face. There will also be students getting signups for volunteering opportunities with refugees and asylum seekers. There will be student and local media around the area.

The University of Strathclyde has a high amount of international students, put international students welfare a priority, and was even the first university to provide asylum seeker scholarships. We would like to take this opportunity to show our students that the University and its members cares about the lived experience of international students.

Please kindly circulate, share, or inform colleagues, lecturers, and staff

Kind regards
