[Academic] PDA role

Most of you should by now have received a note of your new PDA students for this year. If you haven’t,
and you want some, please let me know! For anyone not familiar with the role of a Personal Development
Adviser (PDA) I have attached the “job description” written by Nigel. If you have any further questions,
please let me know.

Personal Development Advisers

The role of a personal development adviser is to ensure that the students reflect on their learning through their time at Strathclyde. To do this you should:
Meet with the students on a regular basis. For 1st year students it makes sense to meet with them at the start of the academic year, after the 1st class test for PH 151 (John Jeffers will circulate details of the marks) and then in December to find out how they have adjusted to the first semester. In the Second semester it is best to meet with the students after the January Diet of Examinations and then suggest that they get in touch after the May Diet of examinations’ results have been released. I am sure that you can think of appropriate questions to find out how they are getting on, what they think they need improve in their study etc.
If a student approaches you with personal problems identify what the problem is and then deal with appropriately. For minor health issues direct the student to log the issue on the personal circumstances section of PEGASUS. This would include the death of a close family member and if this happens the student needs to supply a copy of the death certificate as well. If the issues are more complex then direct the student to the appropriate service in Student Experience and Enhancement Services (SEES) http://www.strath.ac.uk/sees/
