[Academic] Audio recording of lectures

Hi Nigel,

thank you for your message and the warning to this new BB programme.

It is of course a big no from me. Sentences like

As part of its commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment, the University normally permits students to audio record lectures. Instances where recordings are not permitted are deemed as exceptional and it is anticipated that this will only relate to situations where copyright, data protection or commercial intellectual property rights of others could be infringed, or where lectures include sensitive clinical material or personal data.

are scaring. What on earth is an ‘inclusive learning environment’? Who is included, who is excluded?
It is time to stop to use sentences that have no meaning and use them to justify meaningless actions.

I do not want any of my lectures to be recorded as audio or as videos. I have no subscription
or connection with any (a)social media and I do not intend to patrol them to check if students
post my lectures or bits of my lectures or sentences taken out of context on such despicable
sites. My lectures and all lectures prepared by academics in our Department have required an
enormous amount of time, dedication and care to be developed and delivered. Entire lecture
courses on Physics subjects have intellectual property value and I do not want any person to
take advantage of my work and sell it for their personal advantage simply because I do not have
the time and resources to police the internet.

I have been asked in the past to record my lectures by students with disabilities and allowed
this to take place immediately with no objections. On these occasions I specifically said that
recording by other students is not allowed. I do not allow the use of mobile phones or recording
devices during any of my lectures and I intend to do so in the future. If the University will
operate the regulations of the article above, I would require to have all of my lectures and tutorials
to be exempted from any recording on the exceptional instance that they are taught by me.

I hope that any other academic in our Department who share these concerns will express their
views to you so that you can have a clear message of dissent for the Faculty Office.

Thank you for alerting us on this piece of nonsense and asking for feedback. Great work as usual.

Best wishes,

gian-luca

Dear All,

I have been asked by the Faculty Office to provide feedback on the attached which essentially says that the University will operate the following practice - “students will not normally be required to ask permission to record lectures for personal use”. In terms of group work "The University will endeavour to permit audio recordings of these sessions in accordance with its approach to lectures, in that it is presumed that permission to record is normally granted, however, additional steps must be implemented to ensure that the lecturer notifies, and obtains express permission from, participating students for the learning activity to be audio recorded.”

If you have any comment then please let me know by 7th March so that I can forward to Faculty Office.

Thanks

Nigel
