[Academic] Hybrid Journals of the Institute of Physics

Dear Colleagues,

at a recent meeting about Open Access, Mr. Pablo De Castro, the Open Access Advocacy Librarian of the
University of Strathclyde, discussed with me the issue of Hybrid Journals of the Institute of Physics (IOP).
On its web page the IOP writes: "The majority of journals published by IOP Publishing are hybrid titles meaning that
they offer publication under the subscription model, the option to self archive after an embargo (green open access) and
a gold open access option."

In order to make an article ‘Gold Open Access’ on these IOP hybrid journals one has to pay a charge.
One possibility to avoid these Gold Open Access charges is for the University to pay the IOP more (around 5%)
for the annual subscription of these hybrid journals. A list of IOP hybrid journals is provided below.

We have been asked to choose one of these two options:

1) Leave the payments of Gold Open Access charges to the people publishing in these journals at the moment
of publication of an article, or
2) pay more for the annual subscriptions to IOP hybrid journals and have Gold Open Access for free.

As the person in charge of Open Access for the Department, I would for sure opt for option 1 since the number
of publications in these IOP hybrid journals from our Department is low, 5% of the annual subscription to IOP is
a substantial amount of money and the most relevant IOP journal in Physics, the New Journal of Physics, is not
included in the list of hybrid IOP journals.

I have been asked however to contact all Physics academics in the case they publish many papers in IOP
hybrid journals and require Gold Open Access for these papers. If you object to option 1, please let me
know before 17th April 2017.
