Dear All,
The next EPSRC call for Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT) is expected out early 2018. There has been a meeting in the University informing us of what is known and what is expected of the call and I shall try to convey the key points as well as give an indication of the expected timeline.
One of the key points is that substantial external funding is going to be required. The expectation is that EPSRC are only looking to fund in the region of 30% to at the very most 50% of the cost. There is no indication as yet what resource the University will commit, but realistically we are looking at raising of order £2M externally to support a bid. It would seem sensible to start this process as soon as possible for any bids we seek to lead or play a major role in. In this process it is worth considering that there is an expectation that EPSRC would want to see these external partners fully embedded in the CDT, e.g. training provision, advisory roles, student secondments/projects, etc.
The University process for selecting CDT bids to support follows the familiar Department --> Faculty --> University prioritisation route. To assist in that we have been asked to fill in as much detail as possible on the attached Expression of Interest form. The deadline for it has been extended till the 18th of September. If you submit or have already done so, please send me a copy. It is important to note that the form has to be submitted both for bids that we lead and those where we are partners. Although the form isn't totally clear on what it is asking for I think it would be helpful to have a clear indication of the proposed team as well as external partners both academic and industrial. In identifying the latter, please again keep in mind that we may potentially be looking at a significant financial ask.
The indicative timeline is as follows:
18th September: University deadline for Expression of Interest form to be returned.
October: EPSRC budget for CDTs announced - i.e. we should know how many will be supported.
Nov/Dec: Priority areas confirmed.
Nov/Dec: Town hall meetings.
Late November: Deadline for draft bids --> University rank ordering.
January 2018: Call released.
April/May: Application deadline.
In addition to this there will be another call closing on the 31st of October for two Strathclyde funded CDTs each supporting one cohort of three students. Each SCDT is funded by £100k to be matched from external sources.
Please come and discuss your plans so that we can take part in the strongest possible applications this time around.
Best wishes
Erling
