To all academic staff,
Engagement with Global Challenges Funding Opportunities
The Faculty has asked us to collate information on academics’ research collaborations with developing countries, as well as any new opportunities currently in development.
This is part of an institutional return to SFC.
I would be grateful if you would complete the attached template to indicate your engagements with developing countries. Please note the completion guidance which is included in the template file.
Please return your response (including nil responses) to me by Wednesday 14th March at 12 noon.
Further information, if you want to keep reading, is below.
Thanks very much,
Gabrielle
There are significant funding opportunities are on the horizon via the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The University has already received around £250k of funding to pump-prime GCRF activities; some of these monies have landed in Science already, through responsive-mode bids to the GCRF Institutional Fund.
Research funding to address challenges of developing countries is a growing area of opportunity for a diverse range of academic disciplines. The UK’s £1.5 Billion Global Challenges Research Fund is one example of such aid-funded research. The University is developing a strategy to strengthen our capacity to exploit these opportunities, building on existing strengths and international partnerships, as well as fostering new ones. As part of this initiative, some funding may be made available to broaden and strengthen research partnerships with developing countries.
To inform this process, we need to gather information on our existing partnerships with academic, governmental, business and third sector organisations in developing countries. In particular, we would like to hear about strong partnerships based on previously funded joint research, or past co-development of funding proposals. We are also interested in outreach and impact activities such as consultancy and policy advice.
We require every DoR across the University to complete the attached template, listing:
* Developing countries where you have strong research collaborations (the list of countries eligible for official aid is included in the attached Excel template).
N.B. If you are working with a transnational agency, such as the UN, you might not be able to name a specific partner country. In this case, only complete the partner information.
* The key institutions and organisations with which you have actively collaborated within the last 3 years in these countries. This includes joint research, co-development of funding applications, outreach and knowledge exchange activity.
N.B. If there are more >5, please indicate the overall number and only list the 5 main partners.
* If you are collaborating with other UK organisations active in developing country research, please also list those organisations (up to 5).
* Type of international or UK partner organisation (University, other research organisation, government agency, international agency/charity, national/local business or voluntary organisation, etc.).
* Type of engagement (funded research collaboration, funding proposal development, knowledge exchange/outreach activity, etc.).
* Scope for further partnership building - possibilities of more extensive collaboration beyond the currently known partners? For instance, an academic in partner country may have links with an NGO who may be willing to collaborate in a project. Please respond none/potential/likely/good.
